When Everything Changes - 3

Chapter 3: Life and Death

"Well, I took Bobbie Spencer out to dinner." Jerry answered. "Or attempted to.
She was called to the hospital."

"When?" Jax asked, taking a final sip of his drink.

"I went to the hospital as soon as I left the club. I picked her up and we
went to the Port Charles Grille." Jerry answered. "Anything else?"

Jax looked him steadily in the eye. "Not right now." He sighed and looked
away. "Look, Jerry, I hate doubting you. I really do. But how can I not
after...everything?" He sighed, set his glass down and walked towards the
door. "I'll see you tomorrow. I'm going back to the hospital." He sighed and
shook his head.

~~

"Without surgery, she'll be in really bad shape. With it, she has a chance."
Chris Ramsey told Mac. "Will you sign for the surgery?"

"It's her only chance?" Mac asked.

"Short of a miracle? Yes." Chris nodded.

"Well, then I don't have much choice then do I?" Mac sighed. "Sure, I'll sign
for it."

Chris nodded. "Come with me and we'll get the paperwork."

~~

Felicia ran into Bobbie as she was walking back with the coffee. "Hi."

"Hi." Bobbie smiled sympathetically. "How are Mac and Robin."

"There's no change in Robin." Felcia said, with a sigh. "So, basically,
there's no change in Mac--except that he's even *more* worried by the minute."

"I'm sorry." Bobbie offered.

Felicia nodded. "Me too." She shrugged. "But thanks for calling me."

Bobbie nodded. "I thought if anyone would be able to help, it'd be you."

"I can't make Robin okay, though." Felicia said sadly. "I wish I could."

~~

Jason quietly entered Robin's room. Neither Brenda nor Mac were anywhere in
sight. He sighed and sat down beside her bed.

"Hi." He said simply. He sat there for a minute. "I don't know why I came in,
really. I don't know if you can hear me; I don't think you can. Because you're
not you right now."

He paused. "You know I thought that coming in here would make me feel
better--because you always make me feel better, but I just feel worse." He was
near tears, chocking on them. "Not just because I caused this--though I know
that I did. Because you aren't you." He sighed and took a deep breath, holding
back the tears. "You're just a body. And you're not dead, so I don't know
where you are--where your soul is. It's just lost. But, I really hope it finds
it's way back--I really hope *you* find your way home."

~~

Mac through the window watched as Jason talked to Robin a scowl forming on his
face. He started to go in, but a hand on his shoulder stopped him.

"Don't. Not here." Felicia said softly. "I know you love her--adn I hate that
what Jason does hurt her like this, hurt you like this. But he loves her too,
Mac. He loves her too.

~~

Alexis sighed as she entered her suite. She sunk down onto her couch and shook
her head. She and Ned had definitely said too much when they were trapped--too
much for her to make heads or tails of.

She couldn't know the level of his sincerity... Hell, she couldn't even know
the level of *her* own sincerity when they were trapped in that small room,
thinking that any moment the flames could find there way through the door
and...

She sighed, the jumbled thoughts fading into the back of her brain to the
point where they became almost latent so that she could forget about them.

~~

Not three minutes after Ned entered did he walk to the bar. He took one of the
glasses and filled it halfway up with ice then doused it all with the finest
scotch. He sat down on his couch, setting the glass on his table.

He'd scared her away...or maybe she'd scared herself away, he didn't really
know. Whatever the case, she'd put up yet another wall, this time it was one
he couldn't even identify or figure out how to try and tear it down.

~~

Mac, Felicia, Jason and Brenda watched as they took Robin into surgery. Mac
and Felicia  were in a makeshift embrace. Brenda was sitting in a chair
clutching her half-filled styrafoam coffee cup like it was her line to sanity.
Jason was leaning against the wall, unshed tears in his eyes, off in the
corner, alone and out of sight of Mac, Felicia and Brenda.

But they all shared the same prayer, in their hearts and on their lips: Robin
just had to be allright...
