"I was hungry."
"Oh. Did you finish cleaning your room?"
"Yes."
"Okay. Go on in the kitchen
and see if Aunt Lois will let you taste her
sauce."
"Okay." Scorpio ran off into the kitchen.
"That shouldn't have happened." Brenda said softly.
"Yes it should've."
"No Sonny." She turned around
to face him. "And it can't happen again.
I fought too long and too hard
to get my life together after you left
me. I can't go back.
I won't."
"I'm not asking you to go back.
I'm begging you to move forward. With
me."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"So on a scale from one to ten how mad is Brenda at me?"
"Eleven."
"Perfect."
"Jason," Carly began as she
walked behind him and started to massage
his shoulders, "You've gotta understand.
Brenda trusts you with her
life. With Morgan and Scorpio's
lives."
"Ooh. That feels good. Well I trust
her too. Hell without her I
wouldn't have you or Spencer.
I might not even have Michael. If you
had died the Quartermaine's would've
swooped down and taken him."
"Brenda wouldn't have let that happen."
"Yeah I know. I hate lying to Sonny though."
"You didn't."
"Yes I did. I didn't correct
him when he said that they weren't his
which is the same damn thing."
"Would you stop working yourself
up? If and when Bren tells Sonny about
Morgan and Scorpio is her business.
Not ours."
"I just hope he doesn't hate me when he finds out."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Sonny I don't think we can."
"Please. Don't turn me away. I love you."
"I'm sorry. I can't say the
same."
"Don't lie to me about that again," Sonny told her.
"I'm not lying... Sonny," Brenda
let out a deep breath and gazed into
his eyes. "You've been gone for
six years...I don't even know you
anymore. You didn't expect me to
continue loving you after you hurt me
that way, did you?"
"I kinda of half hoped you didn't believe it," Sonny replied.
"Well I did." Brenda looked down
at her hands. "I believed everything
that you wanted me to. I lost my
mind for you, Sonny. I lost..." Her
voice trailed off and she shook
her head. She looked up into his eyes,
and hers filled with tears. "Yeah,
I lost my way, Sonny. Because there
was a time when I loved you so
very much and that scared the hell out of
me. Now...I don't love you that
way anymore and it feels good. It feels
good to be finally free of you."
Sonny nodded his head through tiny
tears welling within his eyes. "I
see." He turned away and crossed
over to the couch. Brenda watched him
sit down and put his head in his
hands. After a few moments, Brenda saw
him pull his head up. His eyes
were dark and he was no longer crying. "I
love you," Sonny whispered. He
shook his head. "I can't help it. I look
at you and...and...and I just feel
so damn good inside. Like I could do
anything." He stood up and walked
over to her. Brenda felt as if she
were drugged, she couldn't move,
couldn't speak, couldn't do anything
but gaze into his face. "I'm just
going to have to prove to you that I'm
here to stay-"
Brenda's mouth opened and she stuttered,
"I - uh - you... N-n-noooo..."
Sonny pulled her against him and
put his lips to her ear.
"I like to play games, Brenda,"
Sonny whispered hotly. "And I always
win."
Brenda hung onto Ned's arm as they
walked across the dock of Spoon
Island. She looked up at
the house and shuddered just a little. Even
after all this time the place gave
her the creeps.
"Hey Bren?"
Brenda looked at her "big brother". "Yeah?"
"You ready for this?"
"Ready to say good-bye to my best
friend? No. But let's go anyway.
You can go rescue Alexis from the
caterers."
"I'm sure she'll be grateful."
Ned and Brenda entered Wyndemere
and walked into the living room.
Alexis was giving orders, Stefan
was speaking to Bobbie and Carly, Jason
was at the bar with Luke, and Laura
was talking to Liz and Lucky. Ned
went over to Alexis and massaged
her shoulders gently. Brenda watched
as she immediately relaxed into
her husband's arms. Brenda looked
around until she spotted Nikolas
and Karina. The four year old was
standing quietly next to her father
who was sitting down. Nik's face
was bandaged and he looked pale.
Brenda quietly walked over to them.
"Hi Nikolas. Hi Karina."
"Hi Aunt Bren."
"Hello Brenda."
Brenda kneeled down in front of Karina. "How you doing kiddo?"
"I miss my mommy."
"I know sweetie we all do. Got a hug for me?"
"Sure." She put her tiny arms
around her godmother and hugged her
tightly. "I love you Aunt
Bren."
Brenda pulled back. "I love
you too Karina." She looked over at the
door and saw Karen and Joe Scanlon
walk in. "Why don't you go say hi to
Aunt Karen? Then maybe we'll
go for a little walk, if it's okay with
your dad."
"Daddy?"
Nikolas was unable to say no to
his daughter who looked so much like her
mother. "Of course Angel."
Karina walked away and Brenda stood up.
"So how're you doing?"
"I hate this."
"I know the feeling. I remember
Mike's. That was bad." A smile
briefly crossed Brenda's face at
the thought of the teddy-bear like man
who had been a father to her from
the time they had met. "You know
getting dressed this morning I
started thinking about your engagement
party. That was a lot of
fun."
"Best night of my life. Second only to my wedding."
"What about the wedding night?" Brenda teased.
"Very funny."
"I try."
"Aunt Bren?" Karina walked back up to them.
"Yes sweetie?"
"Can we go for a walk now?"
"Of course." Brenda took her hand and they walked out the door.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I hate this." Jason muttered.
"Yeah well it's no picnic for the rest of us ya know." Luke told him.
"I'm sorry. I just feel like
I shouldn't be here. Robin and I didn't
even talk after we broke up."
"Yeah but you still care about her and you need to say goodbye."
"I guess."
"So is Corinthos gonna show?"
"Sonny's back in town?"
Jason and Luke turned around to
see a very pissed off Ned standing
behind them.
"Yeah Sonny's back."
"Does Bren know?"
"She knew before I did. They ran into each other in the park."
"Is she okay?"
"You tell me. She's not exactly speaking to me at the moment."
"Why not?"
"Long story."
"Uh guys? We have a problem."
"What kind of problem?
"Look who just walked in with my bro-in-law."
Ned and Jason turned to look at
where Luke indicated. Jerry had just
entered the room with his brother,
Jax.
Brenda rushed over to Lois. "Lo, what is Jax doing here!?"
"I dunno, I just saw him walk in myself."
Brenda's eyes were wide with terror.
"If he sees Sonny here, he could
blow everything!"
"Sonny's coming?"
"Why wouldn't I?"
Brenda and Lois turned to see Sonny
standing behind them, confusion
written all over his face. Brenda's
heart stopped momentarily. He
looked incredible in a black suit
and dark gray silk shirt. His face
appeared mischeivious, while his
eyes spoke volumes. He didn't take them
off of Brenda, and she cleared
her throat uncomfortably, looking at
Lois.
"Robin meant something to me too," Sonny whispered softly.
Brenda smiled. "Of course she did, Lois and I just-"
"Bren, babe, don't you know how
much I hate it when you speak for me?
You don't do it well." Lois kept
her eyes on Jax, as he talked with Mac
and Felicia, and then watched his
sneaky, dark blue eyes search the
room. His gazed ended on them and
he raised his eyebrows in interest.
Excusing himself, Jax left Mac
and Felicia and walked slowly over to
their small circle.
"Hello, Brenda, Lois...Sonny..."
He smiled his coy smile and tucked his
hands into his pockets like he
always did.
Brenda looked away uncomfortably, muttering, "Jax..."
"Hey, Jax," Lois said as friendly
as she could, as not to throw Sonny
off track by lunging herself at
Jax and ripping his head off.
"Jasper," Sonny nodded. He couldn't
help but notice that Brenda hadn't
met Jax's eye.
Jax sighed. "It's a shame that we
had to meet again under these
circumstances, isn't it?"
Sonny nodded. "Terrible."
"I know what Robin meant to you.
I'm terribly sorry for your loss." Jax
was shocked that he actually, sincerly
meant it.
Turning, Jax walked away and Brenda
and Lois both had to hold in their
sighs of relief. Brenda looked
at Sonny, fearing that he had figured
everything out. He was staring
at her, his eyes large and bright with
love. . .and sadness. Brenda felt
tears gathering in her eyes. She
reached her hand out and took Sonny's.
He looked down at their clasped
hands and his heart shook. She
had such an amazing effect on him. God,
never had he loved Brenda more
in his entire life than he did at that
moment. He brought his head up
heavenward, and was surprised when
Robin's faced flashed through his
mind.
"Don't give up," she whispered to
him. Sonny nodded and brought his head
down, as a tear, a single, tiny
one, slid from his eye.
