"Hello?"
"Carly! Is Sonny there?"
"What? No, I haven't seen him since yesterday."
"Okay-"
"Why, what's wr-"
"Bye!" Brenda hung up the phone
and switched to the other line. She
quickly dialed up Luke's.
"Luke's Place, this is Lucky speaking."
"Oh my God, Lucky!?"
"Oh my God, Brenda!?" Lucky Spencer joked.
Brenda would usually laugh, but
she wasn't in the mood for fun and
games. "Hahaha. Look, Lucky, is
Sonny there?"
"I'm not sure, I could check-"
"Please!" Brenda rushed.
"Okay, okay, hold on. . .oh, wait,
Lizzie thinks she knows where he is.
I'll give you over to her."
Brenda was tapping her feet against
the carpet and moving her hand in
quick circles, indicating she wanted
them to hurry up. "Ummm, okay. . ."
"Hello?" Came Elizabeth Webber-Spencer's voice.
"Lizzie?"
"Hi, Brenda, you want to know where Sonny is?"
"Yes! Have you seen him?"
"Well, yeah, earlier today. Lucky
and I got here around eight and Sonny
was just leaving."
"Did he say where he was going!?"
Elizabeth thought for a moment.
"Uh. . .no, not that I recall. Actually,
all we did was exchange hellos
and then he left."
"Was he alone?"
"No, Jason was with him."
Brenda nodded. "Alright. Thank you so much! And Lizzie?"
"Yeah?"
"You're pregnant, right?"
"Yup, four months!"
Brenda smiled. "Great. I owe ya
for this. Maybe we'll go baby shopping
or do Lamaze classes together or
something. Listen, I gotta go, but
thanks, bye!"
"Okay, by-"
Brenda switched over to the other
line and redialed Carly's number.
"Hello?"
"Carly?"
"What?" Carly hated when people hung up on her.
"Where's your husband today?"
"Right here."
"WHAT? You're cousin-in-law just
said that she saw Jason and Sonny leave
Luke's today around 8?"
"Hold on." Brenda heard Carly murmur,
"Brenda said that Lizzie said that
you and Sonny left Luke's at 8
this morning?" Brenda rolled her eyes and
groaned when she heard Jason go,
"So?"
"SO!?" Brenda snapped, screaming
into the receiver tears rushing down
her face. "I need to speak with
my husband, dammit! Where the hell is
he!?"
Carly came back onto the line. "Jason
said that Sonny told him he needed
to take care of some business.
That's all and exactly what Sonny said."
Brenda bit her lip and nodded. "Okay."
"Calm down, Bren. Morgan and Scorpio
are great, they're playing
upstairs. I'll keep them for the
night."
Brenda nodded her head as more tears
fell. "Okay. Thanks anyways, Carly,
bye." Brenda tried Sonny's pager
and cell phone numbers, but didn't get
a response. By this time, it was
nearly eleven o'clock and she was
hysterical. Curling up into a ball
in the corner of the couch. Brenda
cried herself weak, desperately
trying to ignore the feeling of
impending doom in her heart. She
glanced down at her wedding rings and
kissed them, whispering, "Sonny,
please come home. I need you. I need
you so much, baby. I love you."
Just then, the door opened. Brenda sat
up. "Sonny?" The figure turned.
"Brenda? Oh my God, baby, why are
you crying?" He rushed over to her and
Brenda pushed the tears out of
her eyes.
She smiled gratefully when she saw
her husband's face. "I got so scared.
. ."
Sonny sighed and pulled her against
him, burying her face in his neck.
"I'm sorry if I scared you."
Brenda pulled back. "I paged you,
I called everywhere I could think of
looking for you because there was
something I needed to tell you. . ."
"What is it?" Sonny whispered, tilting
her chin up so she could meet his
eyes.
"Alexis told me that she saw John
Jacks at a convention in London three
months ago."
She watched Sonny's face register
surprise. "So you think that he's
alive?"
Brenda shrugged. "We don't know,
because although Alexis checked out to
see if he had a death certificate
and he did. Which means either he
really is dead or he's just pretending
to be."
Sonny nodded his head. "Right. Wow. This is so complicated."
"What if we never find her?" Brenda
gushed, as new tears spilled over.
"What if-"
"No what ifs. How many times do
I have to tell you we're going to bring
your baby girl home!?"
Brenda wrapped her arms around Sonny's
neck and hugged him. "Don't let
go of me just yet, okay?"
He nodded. "I won't, I promise."
Just then, Brenda pulled herself
back. She looked into his face.
"Sonny?"
"Yeah, baby?"
"Where were you tonight?"
"Where was I?"
"Yeah where were you? You scared me."
"I'm sorry sweetie but I was taking care of some stuff."
"Stuff I can't know about?"
"Some you can't know about."
"Oh. Okay."
"I'm sorry."
"It's okay. Really."
"You sure?"
"Yeah. Listen I'm kinda tired. I'm gonna go to bed."
"Sweetie, listen-"
"No Sonny, it's okay really. You coming up?"
"In a minute. I'm gonna lock up and then I'll be there."
"Okay." Brenda nodded.
She gave his a kiss on the cheek and then went
upstairs. Sonny watched her go
before locking the front door and double
checking to make sure that the
back door was locked and then he too
headed upstairs. When he
entered the bedroom he saw Brenda lying on
their bed. She had gotten
as far as taking off her shirt and now she
was lying on the bed in her jeans
and bra.
"Bren?"
"When I couldn't find you today
I thought maybe you weren't coming
back." She said softly.
Sonny closed his eyes and then laid
down beside her. He wrapped his
arms around her and she snuggled
closer to the warmth of his body. "I'm
so sorry you thought that.
I'm so sorry I ever gave you any reason to
think that I'd leave you."
"I know. I know you're never leaving me again."
"You got that right. I love you baby."
"I love you too." Their silence
was interrupted by the rumble of
Brenda's stomach.
"Hey didn't you eat?"
"No I didn't. I guess I forgot."
"Hungry?"
"Maybe a little." She smiled.
"Stay here. I'll go make something."
"No."
"Why not?"
"Because I want pepperoni pizza."
She grinned as she sat up and crossed
her legs.
"Oh no. You're one of weird
cravings in the middle of the night
pregnant women aren't you?"
"Pepperoni pizza is not a weird
craving. Now if I asked for say
pepperoni pizza with I don't know,
chocolate sauce that'd be a weird
craving."
"Chocolate sauce?" Sonny asked looking nauseous.
"Yeah. Do you know that when
Lois was pregnant with Brooke she hated
the smell of pickles. The
only thing that'd work was the video of her
and Ned's wedding."
"Is Lois okay with Ned and Alexis being married?"
"I guess. We don't really talk about it."
"How is she about you and Alexis being friends?"
"She gets a little annoyed about
it at times. I try not to take sides.
It gets hard sometimes though."
"So why don't you just stop being
friends with Alexis?"
Brenda glared at Sonny. "What?"
"Why don't you stop being friends with Alexis?"
"Because-"
"Because?"
"Because! Ned loves her. . ." Brenda's
voice trailed off. "Although, I
think he still kinda loves Lois
too. I mean, he seems to be talking
about her a lot more now that she's
back in town and. . ." Brenda shook
her head. "Besides! Alexis is nice.
She's independent. She's-"
"Stiff." Sonny leaned on his elbow, looking at her intently.
Brenda shrugged. "Ah-well, sorta,
yeah! But she's also incredibly
intelligent and self-confident.
She's probably one of the strongest
women I know."
"So is Lois."
"But Alexis can accept the Qs."
"It's not Lois' fault that the Quartermaines'
way of life doesn't appeal
to her! She grew up in Bensonhurst,
Brenda! In a close knit Italian
family. Let me tell you, those
Italians...are *tight*. Tighter than
tight."
"Well, it's not *Alexis'* fault
that she grew up as the daughter of
Mikkos Cassadine and his mistress.
. .unloved and unwanted. . ."
Brenda's voice trailed off again
as she realized how much those words
hit close to home. She sighed.
"It kind of makes Ned and Alexis perfect
for one another."
"But you know what they say. . .'opposites'
attract," Sonny sat up and
took her hands in his. "Hey, what
the hell happened, you used to be
pro-Lois and her Nedly!"
"I still am, but I want Ned to be
happy! I want Lois to be happy! And it
just so happens that Ned's happy
with Alexis and Lois is miserable that
Ned is happy with Alexis. I think
I'd be happiest if Lois and Ned were
together, and we could go back
to the L&B days. . .when we were all so
in love with one another. . ."
Brenda was gazing at Sonny adoringly.
"You know what, baby?"
"What?"
"I don't really care about the Lois/Ned/Alexis
triangle. What I care
about is Sonny and Brenda." Sonny
threw his head back and laughed as
Brenda kissed his neck.
"Yeah, I heard they're a pretty hot couple."
"Oh, did you?" Brenda asked, nuzzling her husband's neck.
"Yup. I especially hear that this Brenda girl? She's a babe."
Brenda burst out laughing at her
husband calling her a "babe". "Yeah,
well that Sonny guy? He's pretty
babelicious too."
Sonny reached behind her to unhook her bra. "Is he now?"
"Oh yeah. You know, if I weren't
a happily married woman, I'd definitely
come up with a scheme to get him
in bed with me."
"You have him in bed with you."
Brenda pulled back as her bra fell
from her body. "You know. .
.sometimes I look at us...and I
can't believe we're real. I can't
believe we're married. . .that
we have two incredibly beautiful children
and another one on the way.
I can't believe that after everything, all
the pain that we have caused one
another over the years, after
everything, we're right here, husband
and wife. I. . .I can't even
begin to express my love for you,
Sonny. You're everything to me. My
heart would be broken without you.
I'd be lost without you, I-just the
thought of living another six years
without your face, your smile, your
arms around me. . ." She started
to tear up ". . .scares me so much that
I can hardly breathe. I got so
scared today, I had all of these
flashbacks to that night seven
years ago and I wanted to die." She wiped
a tear away from her face with
her left hand, and Sonny smiled
graciously when he saw her wedding
rings upon her hand. She hadn't taken
them off since he'd put them there.
"Please tell me, please put my mind
to rest that you'll never, ever
leave me. I'd die if you left me again.
. ." Her voice had lowered to a
tiny, tortured whisper. Sonny sighed and
leaned in, brushing his lips against
hers.
"How many times do I have to tell you that I'm here to stay?"
"In my heart I know that, but my
head. . .I just don't want to let you
out of my sight, but I know that
I'd have to eventually." She drew out a
deep breath and tucked her hair
behind her ears.
"I want to give you something." Sonny told her, and slid off of the bed.
"Huh?" Brenda asked, watching as
he crossed over to his tall armoire and
opened it. He took something off
of the tiny-built in shelf and walked
back over to the canopy bed. Brenda
looked at him curiously as he sat
back down Indian-style in front
of her and showed her the small, black
velvet ring box in his hand. Brenda
gasped. "Sonny!"
"It's a little anniversary present."
He handed her the box and whispered
softly, "Open it, sweetheart."
She nodded and looked at him in
amazement as she pulled the lid slowly
up. A tear slid rapidly down her
face as a small gasp escaped her lips.
Brenda brought her tear-filled
eyes up to Sonny's and just stared at
him. Finally tearing her eyes free,
Brenda fingered the beautiful gold
band, studded with tiny diamonds.
"Oh, Sonny. . ."
"Tilt it, I had it engraved." Brenda
pulled it out and tilted it,
gasping as it caught the dim lamplight.
"Oh my God!" She forced out on a
hoarse whisper, tears flowing freely
down her face as she read the tiny,
engraved words, "I'll Always Be In
Your Heart." "How. . .?" She was
so emotionally closed off she couldn't
say anymore.
"I went to the Jeweler's downtown
last week and picked it out. It's been
one month since I made you my wife.
And I haven't regretted it for one
second of one day." He licked his
lips. "Do you like it?"
"I-I love it!" Brenda gushed, still gazing at it.
"Here," Sonny took the ring and placed it on her right hand ring finger.
"Happy Anniversary, Brenda," he
took her face in his hands and kissed
her. Brenda sighed. "My wonderful.
. .beautiful. . .incredible. .
.wife."
Brenda threw her arms around his
neck and kissed him back. Sonny moaned
and they slowly began to undress.
"I'm so in love with you," Brenda
whispered against his lips.
"I love you too," Sonny whispered
back. Clasping hands above her head,
they made love in celebration of
their life together, of one month of
marriage, and to many more years
just like that.
