Mac had to force himself to be calm, he knew if he started on the wrong foot Jason would be unwilling to work with him to get this guy. “Jason, I am here on an urgent matter. It really can’t wait. It’s about the Webber girl’s case.”
Jason had only been half paying attention, but when he heard the name Webber his head snapped around. “How timely Commissioner, it seems that there has been another “accident” this time the target was Lucky Spencer. I was just headed there, perhaps you would like to come along, we can talk on the way.” Jason turned to Reynaldo “have the car brought around, we need to leave right away.”
As they headed down to the garage Mac debated leaving before he got in over his head. He didn’t want to be accused of playing favorites again, after all he just got this job back! Before he could change his mind Jason turned to him. “I can only assume that you are here because you want my help. I presume that you met with Dara and she told you about the guards I have on Lucky and Liz 24 hours a day.” Mac was amazed at Jason’s perception. He shook his head, he knew Robin had to see something in the man, he guessed he knew what it was.
Mac nodded. Jason could tell he had shocked him, he saw the reaction so many times on other people. “You know Jason, the fact of the matter is that your men can keep a lower cover than those on the PCPD. My best men are used to causing a scene and in this case it isn’t appropriate. Besides, this guy seems to be prepared and would spot a cop in a minute.” Mac paused and tried to judge Jason’s reaction. It was impossible to judge the man’s reaction, it almost seemed like he hadn’t heard a work Mac had said. With slightly less enthusiasm Mac continued “I also wanted to know if you had any more leads from your guards. I would really appreciate the help here.”
Jason had heard every word Mac had said, but was dreading
the inevitable question. Should he tell what he knew even though
he knew it would hurt a lot of people who cared about him. He was
about to answer when the glass partition in front slid down. “Looks
like the accident scene is up ahead. Paramedics are already on the
scene.” Jason took the reprieve he was offered. “Thanks.
Mac, we will have to continue this discussion later.” The car stopped
and both men got out.
<V’s apartment>
V was sitting on the couch next to Liz. She had
finally awakened from the forced sleep and was ready to talk. Liz
had told her about the awful night in the park when she was attacked.
V listened with an understanding ear about Liz’s struggle to overcome her
fear and make love with Lucky. “I don’t know V, I feel like everything
has to change now. I thought I had closed that door and now it is
almost like a hurricane blew it right back open again.” V nodded
in understanding. “Liz, I wish I could tell you that things won’t
change. You were forced to relive that horrible night. What
you have to realize is that Lucky hasn’t changed. He loved you before
and he will love you now. He will understand and be patient, lean
on him when you need to. I only wish I had the same kind of support
that you do.”
Liz knew rationally that V was right, Lucky didn’t change and she was wrong to push him away. “I know that in my head, my heart and body don’t always listen though. When did you say he would be here?” Before V could answer the phone rang. V moved to pick it up.
“Detective Androwski here.” Liz was watching V’s face as the caller identified themselves and the reason for the call. V turned away immediately when she recognized the sorrow in Mac’s voice. “I see, I’ll fill her in and meet you at the hospital.” Liz heard the last words and immediately went into a panic and stood up. “V? What is it? Did something happen to Lucky?” V turned around, her face showing everything. Liz sank back down onto the couch and waited.
“Liz, Lucky’s been in a car accident. Mac said the paramedics just loaded him into an ambulance and are on their way to GH. He wants us to be there when it arrives. Lucky is unconscious right now. It looks like there are some severe head injuries and possibly some internal bleeding.” Liz merely nodded and walked towards the door. She blamed herself, if she hadn’t pushed Lucky away he never would have been in this accident. She began to cry silently as they made their way to the car. Liz was silently praying that Lucky would survive. She had to tell him that she loved him.
Chapter 54
**Note: In this chapter Laura returns. She
does not know anything about Luke and Lucky’s estrangement. Luke
never told her and now that things have been improving between the two
of them he felt he would never have to.
Mac and Jason followed the ambulance to the hospital. Mac knew that Jason was holding something back. He decided to let it go for the moment, he was more worried about Lucky and knew that his family had to be notified. He picked up his cell phone and dialed the Spencer house first hoping to find someone at home.
<Spencer home>
Laura stood at the door to the house that was so familiar
to her. She was tired of living in North Carolina away from her husband
and her sons. Her conversations with Luke over the last few months
had been vague and she couldn’t help but sense that something was not right.
She left LuLu with her mother and decided to make a trip back to Port Charles.
If everything went the way she planned she would be staying. She
finally came to the realization that Stefan didn’t want the truth regarding
Nikolas’ paternity to come out any more than she did and she was no longer
going to let him hold it over her head.
With a confident smile she took the key and unlocked the door to her home. Just as she entered the phone started ringing. Probably Luke calling to check on Lucky, she would just answer it and surprise him. “Hello” Laura waited for a response but heard only silence. “Hello, who is this?”
Mac got over his surprise quickly but was unsure how to proceed. “Laura, this is Mac Scorpio, I’m surprised to find you at home.” Laura laughed, “Hopefully my family will be too. What can I do for you?”
Mac hesitated for a second and decided what he would do. “Is Luke there by any chance?” He heard Laura sigh, “I had hoped he would be, but it apears he is out. Probably at the club. Is there a message I can give him?” Mac sighed with frustration. “Laura, I hate to be the one to give you such bad news on your first night back. Lucky has been in a serious car accident. It doesn’t look good. His car flipped several times after losing control on an off-ramp on route 78.”
Laura felt as though her heart had been ripped from her chest. What had she walked into? She half heard Mac say they were following the ambulance to the hospital. She hung up the phone and ran out the door. So much for her surprise.
<Luke’s>
Luke was busy tending bar, it was a mildly busy night which Luke was glad about. He was tired and hoped to close up early. It had been a while since he had received a report from Jason and tonight was going to be the night. He was happy that his relationship with Lucky was improving and knew that in the long run everything would be fine. He was congratulating himself on avoiding telling Laura the truth about the events of late when the phone rang. He decided to wait for one of the staff to pick it up. He grunted in frustration when that didn’t happen and picked up the phone on the fourth ring. “Luke’s.”
Mac heard the familiar drawl of Luke Spencer and wondered again what made his brother respect the man so much. “Luke, Mac Scorpio here.” Luke rolled his eyes, Luke didn’t have a very high opinion of this man in fact he tolerated him only out of respect for Robert. “What is it Scorpio?” Luke’s face turned white as he listened to what Mac said. He slammed down the phone, “Carlos, lock up for me!” Luke headed out the door.
<Ambulance>
Lucky was in a dense fog. The edges of his world
were a blur, there was a bright light and a beautiful woman bekoning him
to follow. He thought it was Liz and rushed to meet her.
Frank Scanlon was trying to get Lucky stabalized.
“His pressure is dropping, pulse is weak. If we don’t hurry up we
are going to have a DOA on our hands!” The driver accelerated through
the intersection praying that they made it to the hospital in time.
Chapter 55
Liz and V were waiting in the emergency room when the ambulance arrived. All h*** broke loose when Frank entered pushing an unconscious Lucky on the gurney. Nikolas rounded the corner with Bobbie when he saw Liz standing next to a woman he didn’t recognize. He walked over towards her. “Hey Liz, what’s going o…” His words died on his lips when he saw Lucky on the gurney in front of him. “Oh my God, what happened?” Nik felt the knots forming in his stomach. This was his brother, even though they didn’t get along he didn’t want to see him hurt or worse, dead.
Bobbie saw how shaken Nikolas was and rushed over to the group. Her eyes fell on the gurney and she screamed “NOOO!! Not Lucky!” She turned to Liz and V “What happened?” V could see that Liz was not ready to talk to anyone as silent tears flooded down her cheeks. “I’m detective Androwski, Ms. Spencer, Mr. Cassadine, why don’t we all get out of the way and I will fill you in on the details I know.
They moved aside just as Mac and Jason entered the waiting room. Liz saw Jason and approached him as V explained the situation to Bobbie and Nikolas. “Jason, do you know what happened? Lucky has always been such a careful driver, and he knew how hazardous that off ramp was.” Jason wished he knew he could see that Liz was blaming herself for Lucky’s accident. “I’m sorry Liz, my men only saw the accident and nothing suspicious.”
Liz crumbled “Jason, Lucky was coming to see me. We had sort of a falling out. This is all my fault. If I hadn’t been so awful to him he would never have been in the car and never would have gotten hurt!” Liz was sobbing. Jason put his hand on Liz’s shoulder in a reassuring gesture knowing that there was no one else there to do it.
Laura walked into the waiting room and took in the scene. Her heart warmed slightly when she saw her son talking with Bobbie and another woman. He was here and he was obviously worried about Lucky. She approached them. “Hello Bobbie, Nikolas.” Both faces registered shock. Bobbie spoke first “your timing always was amazing Laura.” V recognized the name if not the face and realized she was now dealing with Lucky’s mother.
Laura ignored Bobbie’s dig and concentrated on Nikolas. “Nilolas, are you alright? This must be quite a shock for you.” Nikolas looked up at his mother with a hurt in his eyes that Laura mistook for concern over Lucky. “I see he is still most important to you”he said as he turned away from her. Laura shot a questioning look at Bobbie who ignored her and followed Nikolas.
V cleared her throat and Laura suddnely remembered she was there. “I’m detective Androwski Mrs. Spencer.” V was explaining what she knew to a very shaken Laura when there was a loud commotion from the other side of the room.
“Let me through Godd***it! That’s my son in there.” Luke pushed his way into the room and took in the situation. He scanned the crowd and stopped when his eyes met a pair of very familiar ones. “Laura” he mouthed.
Chapter 56
***Note in my story Tony Jones has not become the weirdo
he is now on the show. He stayed the good person he always was in
spite of the way his life was turned upside down.
Luke rushed to Laura and swept her up in his arms. He had never been so relieved to see her face than at that moment. “How are you here? How is Lucky?” Laura could tell by Luke’s reaction to her that he was hiding something. “I came home to surprise you, I guess it worked. Luke, what’s going on here?” Luke knew he had to face this sooner or later, but first he needed some answers regarding Lucky’s condition.” Luke immediately turned away leaving Laura. She sighed and went in search of Nikolas. She was just as anxious to see him as she was to hear about Lucky’s condition.
<Outside Lucky’s room>
Nikolas was standing outside the door to the trauma room when Bobbie found him. She knew when he saw her because he turned away. Nik was mortified that Bobbie had followed him. He didn’t want anyone to know how much it hurt that Laura always chose Luke and Lucky first. She had only used him to fulfill a need and now that LuLu was alright she didn’t need him anymore.
Bobbie approached and laid her hand on Nikolas’ shoulder. “Nikolas, is there anything I can do, I always have been a good listener.” Nikolas took a deep breath and turned to face Bobbie. In spite of himself he had always liked her and she was a good listener. “Oh, Bobbie, it just seems that Laura is always choosing her other family over me. First she fakes her death to be with Luke and Lucky, then she moves away to Switzerland. She didn’t even bother to come home when I got shot, but Lucky is barely here three minutes and she suddenly appears.” Bobbie had been about to speak when they both heard a muffled gasp. Nikolas saw her first and Bobbie’s gaze quickly followed his. Laura stood there with a look of utter shock on her face.
“I’m sorry Nikolas, What did you just say? You were shot? When? You have to know that if I had known that I would have been here for you. I never knew.” Laura’s voice was filled with emotion and Nikolas softened slightly. Bobbie sensing that she would be unwelcome by both Nik and Laura if she spoke her mind chose to leave the two alone. She quietly walked away.
“I guess in my mind I have always known that you didn’t know, but my heart was quick to believe otherwise in order to avoid being broken again.” Nikolas saw the look of hurt enter Laura’s eyes and almost regretted what he said. In an attempt to make her feel better he said “If it is any consolation, Luke helped save my life and Lucky was here practically every day.”
Laura was rocked to the core. Luke had known about this? What else did he know? “Nikolas, forgive me for asking this, but what else should I know, I came home tonight in order to surprise my family, including you, but now it looks like I am the one who is surprised.”
<Waiting Room>
V had seen Mac and Jason enter and wanted to talk to them about the situation, but didn’t feel it was right for her to intrude on Jason and Liz. It seemed like he was comforting her and she definitely needed a shoulder even if it was attached to a notorious crime boss. It was then that she saw Emily Quartermaine round the corner with a very concerned look on her face.
“Liz, I just heard the news on the radio, please tell me that Lucky is alright.” Emily could tell from Liz’s face that he wasn’t. “We haven’t had any news yet Em, but it looks like he had severe head trauma and has suffered some internal injuries. They don’t know how serious it is yet. Your mother and Dr. Jones are with him now.” Liz finished on sobs and Emily immediately wrapped her arms around her. She met Jason’s eyes and understood that he wanted her to take Liz away so that he could take care of business. “Come on Liz, Let’s go sit down, then I will find Amy or Bobbie to see if they have a report.”
When they were out of ear shot Jason picked up his phone. “Not so fast Morgan.” Jason cringed, Mac was still waiting for an answer. Would Jason work with police and share the information he had regarding the man who actually committed the crimes originally pinned on Theodore Murty? Jason turned to face Mac. “Mac, I have been meaning to speak with you. We need to talk it’s about the case.” Jason and Mac headed for the lobby. As they sat down the shrill ring of the cell phone in Jason’s pocket startled them both. On a sigh Jason answered. “This better be good>”
Jason listened as Paul, spoke. “Sir, we’ve tailed him to a remote motel off state route 15. It seems he comes here often. He has been holed up in there for hours with no signs of leaving. Did you want to make your move now?” Reluctantly, Jason agreed that this was a good time. He looked at a frustrated Mac. “I’m really sorry. This is urgent. I have to go, we’ll have to talk about this later. With that Jason left the hospital.
Chapter 57
Jason gave the driver the directions and was speaking to Paul in person within an hour. He had hated leaving Mac in the dark again, but he owed it to those he cared about to attempt to deal with this situation on his own first. He was looking out the window when the tacky sign came into view, “Bluff Top Inn.” Jason sighed, got out of the car and approached Paul. “Mr. Morgan he is in room 215 in the corner. The drapes have been drawn since he arrived.” Jason nodded and headed towards the room.
<General Hospital>
Liz was sitting on a bench with V and Bobbie. Luke was across the room pacing in front of the elevator so that he would be the first to catch anyone with news. Laura was sitting across from them looking rather shell-shocked. Nikolas had gone to find Amy; unable to wait any longer for information on the brother he had wanted so badly to connect with.
It seemed like each minute lasted an hour to Liz. She needed to hear that Lucky was going to be alright. She needed to know that her rock would come back to her. She still blamed herself for his accident, if she hadn’t freaked out on him, he never would have been in the car because she never would have been at V’s apartment.
“Elizabeth, is there anything I can get for you?” V was genuinely sympathetic to this girl. She saw herself in Liz’s hollow eyes. Liz looked up at her, “your being here with me is more than enough. With Sarah and Gram gone I feel really alone right now, Lucky is my family. I need him to get better.”
Liz wiped her eyes and looked up just in time to see Nikolas rounding the corner followed by Amy and Monica. She stood and moved to the center of the room only to be followed by the rest of the group. Luke found his voice first “Monica, how is my son?”
<Room 215>
The man sat alone in the dark. It had been a good
day indeed. He had finally taken care of Lucky Spencer. He
knew that he couldn’t appear at the hospital just yet. He wasn’t
family and he didn’t want to risk his cover. “Soon my angel…soon.”
In his mind he pictured Liz as she would look when she saw him. He
had a whole fantasy…she would look so beautiful and she would immediately
melt into his arms. She would call him her savior.
He was just beginning to become engrossed in his fantasy world, one that was becoming increasingly difficult to leave, when he heard the solid knock on the door. At first he thought that whoever it was had the wrong room and would leave. He was mildly surprised when the knock came again and a third time.
Jason stood outside the door getting increasingly frustrated. Finally he knocked and shouted “I know you’re in there, if you don’t open this door I will break it down.
The man smiled at the familiar voice. Well, he thought, brainless is on to me. He moved to the door stopping at the table along the way to pickup a small but very effective knife.
<General Hospital>
Monica took a deep breath and made eye contact with each member of the group before she spoke. “Lucky is still not awake. We stabalized him in surgery, but he is still in very critical condition. He has a concussion and his internal injuries were major. Aside from a punctured lung, we also had to remove his spleen and gall bladder due to extensive damage.” Monica let her words sink in.
This time it was Nikolas who spoke, much to the surprise
of Liz and Laura. “Dr. Quartermaine, forgive me, but I think what
we all need to know is what does all this mean for his recovery.”
Monica smiled at the boy appreciating his matter-of-factness. “Well,
assuming he doesn’t start to bleed again or throw a clot he should come
out of it.” She noted the look of relief on the faces and wanted
to make sure they knew the risks. “That is not a guarantee, he will
have a very long road ahead of him.”
