Building a Mystery - 7

"Uhhhhhh..........."

Emily's eyes widened and her head raised slowly, afraid to hope but
hoping none-the-less.

"Lucky?"

She was gifted with another moan.

"Oh my god Lucky! Can you hear me?"

His body remained motionless, but his lips struggled to make words.

"Em?"

His voice was thin and raspy, so quiet she strained to hear him. She
smiled tearfully.

"I'm here Lucky......... I'm here......."

"Emily......"

His face contorted in pain.

"Em, I'm sorry........."

Her brow furrowed in confusion.

"What? Lucky, you don't have.........."

"You deserve better.......... than me."

"Oh no......... don't you dare Lucky Spencer........... you're the
best friend I've ever had, and I wouldn't trade you in for the
world......... In good times and in bad."

"I've been....... bad friend......."

Emily smiled and squeezed his hand tighter.

"You've never been a bad friend Lucky......... just an absentee
one.......... and so have I......... at least now we can fix it, right?"

She watched as the tormented features of his face softened and a serene
peace seemed to settle over him.

"I love you too Emily."

She bit back a sob. He had heard her.......... He heard her tell him she
loved him....... as a friend. He wasn't embarrassed to say he loved
her......... why had she been?....... she knew why...... the same reason
she caught herself relishing in the words "I love you Emily". She closed
her eyes and sighed. She had to stop this........

"Emily?"

Her eyes snapped open, realizing she had left him hanging.

"Yeah."

"I'm having trouble opening my eyes........"

Lucky's brow creased in effort and frustration.

"Well, you're probably exhausted........ maybe you should rest.......
I could go get a nurse..... if..... you're..... in pain......."

Emily glanced up at him and returned her gaze back down to the floor.
Terror slowly seizing her, her eyes widened, and she found herself
moving cautiously to peer at Lucky straight in the face.

"Lucky?"

Her words came out short of breath.

"Can you see me?"

"I just........ I just can't seem to open my eyes........."

Emily shuddered involuntarily. She tried but couldn't keep the tremor
out of her voice.

"Lucky........ I'm..... I'm gonna go get a nurse okay?"

Lucky=92s voice echoed her terror.

"Emily?......."

"Just hold on....... I'm gonna go get a nurse......."

"EMILY! WHAT'S GOING ON??!!!"

Lucky's hand slowly rose to his face. His fingers brushed up to his
eyes and flew away in horror as he felt his eyelids blink shut and open
again. He could hear his heart monitor racing.

"Oh god........ god."

He squeezed his eyes tightly shut........ no difference.

"Oh please.......... god no......."

It was like he was sailing during a storm...... the roaring of the waves
deafening him..... building in magnitude around him. The air chilled
him, sending shivers down his spine. Nauseous-- the world was
rocking......... he was alone, out of control...... He needed to get in
control........... he needed to steer to safety....... Where was he? Oh
god..... Where was the moon? The stars? All he could see was darkness.
He was trapped........ waiting for the waves to swallow him........

"Bobbie?"

Bobbie opened her eyes and looked up.

"Amy! There you are..... I was looking for you......"

Fear flashed across Amy's face as she sat down in the chair next to
her.

"What? Did something happen? Is Lucky okay? Luke?"

Bobbie smiled reassuringly.

"No ........ so far Lucky's ...... okay. I think he's still
unconscious....... Emily's in with him now."

Amy nodded sadly, digesting the information.

"So he doesn't know the truth?"

"About his paternity?........ I don't know....... I told him but I
don't know if he heard."

"And Luke?"

"Doesn't know either.......... Sonny's men couldn't find him and
he still hasn't tried to make contact with anyone........"

Amy sighed. They sat letting silence fall between them........ a little
calm after the storm. Bobbie broke the silence.

"How was Laura?"

Amy glanced at Bobbie before looking away.

"She was sleeping........."

Bobbie noted Amy's abrupt comments. Very un-Amy-like. She could tell
this was affecting her a great deal. Amy probably never had to deal with
stuff like this........... growing up Spencer you got used to it. It
seemed like every day was a soap opera........

"BARBARA JEAN!"

Bobbie spun around shocked.

"Luke?!"

Bobbie and Amy's jaws hung open at the sight in front of them. Luke
stood in-between detectives Garcia and Taggart, his hands handcuffed
behind his back. Black soot covered him head to toe and some areas of
exposed skin appeared to be burned. Next to the threesome Nikolas
attempted to get out of a wheelchair, only to be gently pushed back by
Stefan. He appeared in the same manner as Luke...... streaked with black
and reddened patches.

"I'm not an invalid! I CAN walk!"

"Nikolas, I prefer you ride in this chair....... it's for your own
safety."

"Taggart would you let go of me!!!"

"Oh no way Spencer........ you are still under arrest, remember?"

"How could I forget? The handcuffs are cutting off my circulation......
I'll probably lose a couple of fingers......."

"Less fingers to light matches with."

"I DID NOT SET FIRE TO WYNDEMERE!!!!"

Amy and Bobbie exchanged wide-eyed glances. Bobbie stood and walked over
to her brother, stopping only briefly to throw a dirty glare at Taggart.

"Luke are you alright?! What happened?"

"Bobbie....... Lucky........... is he........."

He forced the words through the emotion clouding him. His terror-filled
eyes pleaded for good news.

"They think he's going to be okay......."

He expelled a large breath he had been holding and let the tears that
had been burning the backs of his eyes spring forward.

"He's alive?...... He's alive!.......... HE'S ALIVE!!!!"

He laughed laughter of joy and relief. His knees were weak....... he was
going to collapse of happiness. Taggart tightened his grip on Luke as he
felt him begin to slide to the floor, laughing all the way. Nikolas
watched from his chair....... he felt like a child lost in a candy
store........ a little scared, very confused, but at the same time
excited and happy. He looked up at his uncle...... his reaction was
definitely not the same....... he looked, well, just plain scared.
Nikolas' brow furrowed. Not the reaction he would have expected.
Stefan looked down noticing Nikolas studying him. His indifferent facade
went back up.

"Nikolas, I wish for you to be examined by a doctor immediately."

Stefan looked around, stopping the first nurse that walked by.

"Excuse me........ I want my nephew to be admitted now."

The nurse looked slightly annoyed.

"Sir, you have to fill out these forms first, and then a doctor will see
you as soon as he has time."

Stefan could barely contain his fury.

"I am Stefan Cassadine! I own this hospital! Now if you and the doctors
wish to keep your positions, I suggest you MAKE time for my nephew!!!!"

The nurse scurried away and returned moments later with a doctor and a
chart.

"Mr. Cassadine I can see your nephew in curtain 3."

Stefan sighed and began wheeling Nikolas away. He could still hear
Luke's cries of joy behind him.

"Oh thank god!....... Thank you god!"

Stefan's grip on the handles tightened. This is not how it was
supposed to turn out....... Everything...... all his plans were going to
hell in front of him....... when did he lose control? How did this
happen? It was foolproof...... a perfect plan....... he'd be rid of
Luke and Lucky, and could finally have Lasha...... he had even found a
way to take down Helena in the process........ "There's still a
chance.........."

Bobbie's voice drifted down the hallway.

"Luke, there's something else you need to know........."

Stefan swallowed the lump in his throat and increased his pace.

************************************************************************

Luke braced himself for the worst........ oh god, Lucky was paralyzed,
or a vegetable, or he's okay now but isn't going to be for
long.......

"We ran some blood tests........ bloodtyping, paternity......."

Luke looked up in shock........ he'd nearly forgotten about that. A
nauseated feeling swirled in the pit of his stomach......... he wanted
so badly to forget about all of this....... the fact that Lucky wasn't
his...... but Stefan's, that his wife lied to him for god-knows how
many years, that his son tried to commit suicide......... god, what if
he tried it again? He said he'd never be a Cassadine.......... if
there's one thing Luke had always taken pride in was Lucky's
determination..... but now it scared the hell out of him.

By now Luke was kneeling on the floor, his head in his hands, eyes
tightly shut. Taggart and Garcia stood over him each too perplexed by
the turn of events to get a nurse. Bobbie looked down at her brother
concerned. He didn't appear to be listening to her. She knelt down in
front of him lifting his head up to look him straight in the eyes.

"Luke, are you listening to me?"

His sad eyes slowly raised to lock with Bobbie's.

"Luke you............ YOU are Lucky's biological father....."

Bobbie studied Luke's blank expression. She was about to speak again,
when the air rushed out of his lungs and he lurched forward.

"Luke!"

His eyes looked up to Bobbie's wide with shock and disbelief pleading
for affirmation of what he thought.... hoped..... he heard.

"Luke it's true.... all the tests were conclusive..... YOU ARE HIS
FATHER........"

Luke opened his mouth to speak but closed it again. There were no words
that could express what he was feeling..... only the tears that now
flowed freely down his face. It was like he was at his son's birth
again. Lucky was reborn to him, he had become a father again.

Luke looked up, offering Bobbie a watery smile.

"He's mine......."

She laughed through her tears.

"Yeah Luke, he is.............. you know, for me there was never any
question... you two are like clones...... besides, I heard being a
smart-ass is genetic."

Luke laughed whole-heartedly. Noticing the audience that had witnessed
his emotional rollercoster ride, he attempted to wipe away his tears
with his shoulders. Garcia snapped out of his awe.

"Uh........ we need to get you checked out and then down to the
station......."

Taggart wore a bemused expression.

"Oh..... I was kinda enjoying the show......"

He was disappointed when Luke didn't even flinch.

"Alright, uppsie-daisy Spencer..... chit chat time is over..... you'll
have plenty of time to talk with your cellmates in cell block D......"

Garcia and Taggart each grabbed an arm and hoisted Luke to his feet.
Bobbie jumped up.

"I'll take him."

Garcia raised an eyebrow.

"Excuse me?"

"I'm a nurse, I'm on duty...... those burns need to be
dressed........"

He eyed her doubtfully. Bobbie could feel the annoyance bubbling up
inside her.

"I'm not going to participate in any jailbreaks if that's what
you're worried about... I just want to do my job."

Garcia reluctantly nodded his head.

"Okay....... let's go........."

They turned to start heading down the hallway.

"NURSE! I NEED A NURSE!!!"

Bobbie spun around immediately recognizing Emily's voice.

"Bobbie come quick! Lucky needs your help!"

Emily turned and ran back to the room, not even noticing Luke's
horrified presence. He lurched forward to run after Emily only to be
caught by the detectives.

"NO!!! LET ME GO!!! I HAVE TO GO TO MY SON!!!!"

Amy ran forward.

"Bobbie you go....... I'll take care of Luke."

And with that, Bobbie was gone.
