The Past Becomes Known in the Present - 10

Sly sat in his bedroom, listening to his music and doing his homework.
A small noise caught his attention, he turned his ear towards his door.
Again, he heard a small thumping at the door.  He got up and walked
downstairs.  He opened the door and his mouth dropped wide open.  There,
on his front doorstep sat Lucky Spencer and Emily, along with two other
people he didn’t know.  “Sly man!  How are ya?”  Lucky put out his hand
and Sly shook it.  “Not bad,  what are you doing here man?” Sly asked
bewildered.  Lucky looked at the other four, “Look, could we come in?
We need to ask you a big favor.”  Sly held the door open and watched as
the four slightly bedraggled teens tromped into his living room, hauling
their bags behind them.  They all sat down on the couches in the living
room.  Lucky introduced Nikolas and Liz to Sly, and then got right down
to business.  “Look, Sly, here’s the story,”  Lucky began.  He glanced
at the others before continuing.  “We need a place to crash, while we’re
avoiding our parents.  Let’s just say we’ve all met with creative
differences.  We needed a break, and we thought we’d come visit you.”
Sly licked his lips, “You mean you all want to stay here?”  Lucky
shrugged, “Not here necessarily,  we just need to know where we can stay
that’s cheap and fairly far away from adult contact.”  Sly thought for a
minute,  “Well, you could probably go up north and stay at Paul’s
brother’s cabin.”  Lucky nodded.  Emily sat forward, “Will the brother
be around at all?”  Sly shook his head, “No,  he died a few years ago
and left Paul the cabin for fishing.  We never go there because it’s too
far away.  And Paul and Jenny can never get the same time off work, and
when they do, Jenny sure as hell wouldn’t go fishing.”  Lucky looked at
Liz and Nik, they both nodded at him, “Sounds great man.  We could crash
there for a few days, weeks, whatever?”  Sly grinned, “Use it as long as
you like.  There’s a little town up there too, where you can buy
supplies and food.  No one will question you about anything.  It’s a
town for the fishing tourists.  They get so many people up there, they
don’t recognise anyone.”  Emily stood up, “It sounds perfect Sly, thanks
so much.”  Sly smiled at her, and went into the kitchen.  He came came
back and handed Lucky the key and the address.  “You can catch a bus out
there if you want.  I’m not sure where you get on around here though.
Your best bet is to go through the travel office.”  Lucky slapped Sly on
the shoulder, “Thanks a lot man.  Oh, just one more thing,  if anyone
asks, we were never here.’  He picked up his bags,  “Come on guys, we
better split before Jenny and Paul come home.”  He shook Sly’s hand
again. Emily gave him a hug.  The four teens headed out the door.

Stefan stood on the Spencer’s porch, waiting impatiently for Luke and
Laura to load all their gear into the limousine.  He glanced at his
watch and tapped his fingers on the railing.  Monica leaned out the
window,  “Stefan!  What’s taking them so long?”  Stefan shrugged his
shoulders, “ I don’t know, why don’t you ask the world travellers?”  He
frowned at Luke as he struggled out the door.  “Don’t give me that look
Vlad,  we’re all set.  Let’s motor!”

Lucky sat on the edge of the dock, feet dangling over the water.  This
was his favourite time of day.  No one else was up and the sky was still
growing light out.  The water was smooth and glassy, and there was no
wind.  He wrapped a blanket around his shoulders and surveyed the
surroundings.  The cabin was set at the end of a long chain of cabins,
but set apart far from the rest.  A tiny stretch of rocks created an
almost cove like atmosphere to the lakefront and Lucky was sure that
they would be totally isolated from the rest of the beach.  He looked
back up at the cabin.  Everyone else was still asleep.  Lucky smiled as
he remembered standing in the doorway of Liz and Emily’s room, watching
Emily sleep.  She had looked so peaceful and calm.  He stared out at the
water.  Worries began to float through his head, what if their parents
found them?  The others would have to go back.  But he couldn’t.  He
couldn’t face his parents, knowing what he knew.  He took a deep
shuddering breath.  He still got a sick feeling in his stomach whenever
he thought about that night.  Overhearing his aunt and father was the
worst thing that had ever happened to him.  Of course, the rest of that
week he didn’t remember.  The last thing he remembered after that was
hearing Em’s voice as she read to him.  Lucky shook his head, no, he
couldn’t go back to Port Charles.  Right now he’d rather live with the
Cassidines than the Spencers.

Nikolas tossed and turned in his bed.  Dreams of Stefan and images of
him telling him stories of his “father”.  Riding with his “uncle”,
dinners with relatives, who else knew this terrible secret. Suddenly the
images turned to everyone he knew, laughing at him, pointing and
shouting “Fool! Fool!”  Nikolas bolted upright in bed.  He gasped for
air.  He glanced around him, taking a few moments to recognize his
surroundings.  He lay back down at the ceiling.  No way could he ever go
back to Port Charles.  He sighed,  “I’d rather live with the Spencers
than the Cassidines.” he muttered to himself.

Luke sighed as he unloaded his gear in the hotel room.  Laura paced back
and forth across the window.  “What time does the cruise come in?” she
asked nervously.  He glanced at his watch, “Not til tonight.  We’ll find
them darling,  I promise.”  He pulled her into a hug.  He smirked as he
thought of his two travel companions next door.

Monica frowned as she surveyed the hotel room. “Well at least it has two
beds.” she muttered to herself.  Stefan scowled,  “I  refuse to believe
that the hotel accidentally filled up my room.  People will be hearing
about this.  This hotel will be shut down as soon as I get the chance.”
He dumped his suitcase on the bed, “On second though.  I bet Spencer had
everything to do with this.”

Stefan and Luke stood on the dock at the harbour,  shading thief eyes
in the harsh morning sunlight.  “I don’t see them anywhere.”  Stefan
muttered, disapointed with the group’s failure.  “I thought for sure
that they would be here.”  Luke turned to look at him,  “This was the
first guess.  There’s a million places they could be, a million ways to
get there.  We just have to keep looking.”  Stefan frowned at him,
“Nikolas could be injured or hurt.  We don’t know what kind of state the
children are in. Don’t berate me for worrying about my nephew.”  Luke
turned and faced the water.  “Well, Stefan I can guess I can’t blame you
for worrying about your son.”  Stefan’s calm demeanour wavered
slightly,  “What do you mean? My son?”  Luke turned around, and looked
in right in the eyes with a cold stare.  “That day after we met at the
airport, I did a little research of my own.  I know everything.”  Stefan
exhaled deeply,  “Does Lasha know that you know?”  Luke turned away from
him,  “I’ll tell her when I think my family is ready.  When we find
Lucky I don’t want this to set him off and send him running again.” He
rubbed his tired eyes, “Look, I’m making this quite clear to you now
Vlad,  I’m not cooperating with you on this trip because I want to be
bosom buddies.  I’m only doing this because I want to find my son, and
unfortunately, that goes hand in hand with finding yours.  So let’s just
concentrate on that, and try not to let our personal lives get mixed up
in it.”  And with that, he turned on his heel and walked towards the
information desk.

Lizzie and Emily lay on the deck, trying to get tan’s in the warm sun.
Lizzie lifted her new sunglasses to talk to Em.  “I’m so glad we came
here to “run” away.  It’s so much milder and warmer here than Port
Charles.”  Emily nodded,  “Me too.”  She chewed thoughtfully on her
thumbnail,  “School would have been out today do you realise that?”
It’s the end of may.  We missed exams.  Do you think we failed?  Liz sat
up,  “I know you didn’t Em, you had straight A’s.  I probably did, but
I’ll go to summer school.... sometime.  I was barely passing anyway.
Nikolas had tutors, so he can start whenever he wants.  And Lucky had
good enough grades.  Besides schools don’t really look at your grades
other than grade 11 and SATS.”  Em nodded.  “Alright.  That’s probably
right.  We’ll be fine.”  She laid down again and sighed.  One less worry
on my mind for now, she thought  to herself.

Monica and Laura walked away from the travel desk defeated.  “I can’t
believe they weren’t here. And no one has seen anyone fitting those
descriptions.” Monica looked at her hands, frustrated.  Laura nodded,
“I know it’s hard Monica,  but don't' worry Emily will be fine.  I’m
sure they’re all taking very good care of each other, I mean....” She
was cut off as the woman at the desk ran up to them,  “Ma’am! Ma’am!”
The ladies turned around to see the woman running towards them.  “I just
got word from one of the bus tour drivers, that he saw some kids
matching your children’s description!”
