A Love to Last a Lifetime 4

Chapter 21

Lucky and Liz were lying on the bed in their room kissing.  Her hands were in his hair and their bodies were molded together.  Her tongue tentatively touched his and he moaned.  He broke away and looked into her eyes still tasting her.  “You are so beautiful” he said gruffly.  She smiled and kissed him again, this time with even more passion than before.  Her hands fought their way under his shirt and were enjoying the feel of his muscular chest.  His fingers were working the buttons on her top unsuccessfully.  Finally, she broke away from him and helped him.  He took his shirt off and was watching as she pulled hers over her head.

“Lucky, wake up, are you alright.”  He heard her calling him from far away.  Reluctantly he let his dream slip away and opened his eyes.  She was standing over the bed, her eyes red from the late night paper-writing session.  “What were you dreaming about?  You sure were moving around a lot.”  Lucky remembered his dream and blushed fiercely.  He couldn’t tell Liz about his dream.  She knew she wanted to take things slow, and his dream definitely was not conducive to that.  “Um, I don’t remember,” he said lamely.

Liz only smiled, she hadn’t told him that he was saying her name and asking her not to stop.  Wisely, she let it go at that, but kept the memory to herself.  Someday she hoped she would hear those words when he was awake, but she wasn’t ready to take that step or face the demons she knew she would find there.  “Oh, alright.  Well, I am finished with the assignment but I can’t get the printer to work.  I think I must have it hooked up wrong or something.”

Lucky’s head was beginning to clear.  “I’ll take a look at it.”  He stood and walked over to the table Ruby had put in their room for them to use as a desk.  “Oh, here it is, the connection was just loose, it should be fine now.  I will just print it out for you.”  Liz watched him work and thought how sexy he looked.  She had loosened the cable herself just so she could watch him.  She grinned to herself.  “Okay, all done.  Did you save all the changes?”  Liz nodded and he turned the computer off for the evening.

“I’m glad I didn’t wait until tomorrow to do this, now I can sleep late and still go to the movies with all of you tomorrow.”  Liz said stifling a yawn.  “I feel like I could sleep for days.  Maybe I will have a dream as good as yours seemed to be,” Liz smiled impishly at the way Lucky was blushing.  “From that comment, I guess you know I was dreaming about you.”  Lucky turned towards her but didn’t quite meet her gaze.  She smiled and said “It was kind of hard not to notice, I’m sorry I teased you about it, I thought it was flattering.”

Lucky walked up to her and wrapped his arms around her.  Liz felt an initial jolt of panic, but it quickly passed as she looked into Lucky’s eyes.  Lucky lowered his lips to hers and kissed her deeply.  It was better than his dream because it was real.  Liz stepped back.  “Sleep with me tonight, Lucky.  Lie here with me and hold me.”  Lucky smiled understanding that she was not ready to bring their physical relationship to the next level.  “Anything for you Elizabeth.”  He turned out the lamp and joined her on the bed.  They were both asleep practically before their heads hit their pillows.

Chapter 22

Sarah entered Kelly’s and noticed that everyone was already there waiting for her.  Emily smiled and walked over to her.  “Liz finished her paper, and she can go with us tonight after all.  I’m so glad we have this moment alone.  I am planning sort of a post-test celebration for Liz, she has been through so much lately I figured she could use some fun.  Lucky knows all about it, but Liz is in the dark.  It will be tomorrow night after the SAT here.  I really hope you can make it.”

Sarah was so happy to be included and was smiling hugely when she said “of course I will be here.  What can I do to help you get ready.”  Emily was about to respond when Liz surprised her from behind.  “Get ready for what?”  Liz asked.  “Oh,” Emily said quickly “Sarah and I were just joking about the prom next year, I told her I couldn’t imagine my family helping me get ready and she offered her help.”  Emily could only hope she didn’t sound too lame and that her friend bought it.

Liz had a puzzled look on her face, but didn’t say anything.  Instead she handed Sarah the paper she had completed the night before.  Here you go Sarah, Mr. Williams said he would meet you outside at 11:00 sharp.  He sounded almost like he wouldn’t wait any longer than that.”  Sarah smiled at Liz reassuringly.  “Don’t worry sis, I won’t let you down.”  “Thanks Sarah, I really appreciate this.”  Emily sensed that Sarah and Liz needed some time alone so she said, “I am going to go see what is keeping Lucky.”

When Emily was gone Liz spoke again “How is Gram?”  She was genuinely concerned about her grandmother she just couldn’t live with her.  “She misses you, and is clinging to me like a security blanket.  I didn’t tell her I would be with you tonight just in case she decided to tag along.”  Sarah was laughing, a sound that Liz had forgotten she liked.  “I’m sorry Sarah, I wish things could be different.”  Sarah’s face suddenly became serious “Oh, Liz I admire you so much for sticking to your beliefs.  I only wish now that I had been a stronger person.  Instead of standing up for myself I have always been too concerned about what other people think of me.  I am changing though and I have you to thank.”  Sarah had tears in her eyes when she finished.

Liz was stunned.  She felt like she was finally getting to know her sister and she was turning into someone she actually liked.  “Sarah, maybe my doing this was the best thing for us too.  I mean now we can be friends as well as sisters.”  Liz had tears in her eyes and the two sisters hugged for the first time in recent memory.

Emily returned with Lucky.  “Hey are you two okay?”  Sarah and Liz broke apart and wiped their faces.  Both of them nodded.  “Okay then, Reginald is waiting outside.  The only way my parents would let me come was if he drove.  I hope you guys don’t mind.”  Emily finished suddenly looking concerned.  “Are you kidding?” they all said in unison.  Liz finished what everyone else was thinking, “who would mind having a night out on the town in a chauffeured car?”  They all laughed as they exited Kelly’s and walked towards their waiting chariot.

The man smiled at the group. Tomorrow Lucky Spencer would be out of his way.  Someone would need to be there for his heartbroken angel.  He would make certain that he was that someone.

Chapter 23

They had a wonderful time and were sorry when Reginald brought the car to a stop outside of Kelly’s.  “Are you sure you two don’t want to come in for a while?”  Lucky asked Sarah and Emily.  Sarah was stifling a yawn when she declined the invitation.  She had such a wonderful time and felt as though her world had changed for the better since her conversation with Liz.  Emily, though not tired did not want to risk her freedom “Mom and Dad will be worried if Reginald does not get me home soon.”  They all exchanged hugs as Liz and Lucky exited limo.  Reginald did not pull away until he was sure they were safely inside.

Lucky turned after waving to the limo as it slid away from the curb.  Liz had a pensive look on her face.  “What is it baby?”  Lucky was suddenly concerned and moved closer to Liz.

“Oh, its nothing bad.  I was just thinking how nice it is to have a sister.”  Lucky looked at her strangely and she began to explain.  “Sarah and I just had the best conversation tonight.  I feel connected to her like I never have before.  I feel like we are actually going to be friends now.  The funny thing is, I never thought that I wanted that, but now I know how much I really did.”  She smiled as she finished thinking about how she understood her sister for the first time.

Lucky smiled and pulled her into his arms.  “I wondered what all of those tears were about, I’m happy for you, Liz.”  They held each other for a few minutes and then decided to head upstairs.  “Why don’t you go up and get ready.  I will make sure everything is locked down here and join you in a few minutes.  “Alright, sounds great.”  Liz already had a plan forming in her mind.

Lucky locked up and puttered around downstairs for a few minutes giving Liz privacy so she could get ready for bed.   He thought about what it had been like to wake up next to her and hoped that she would let him hold her again tonight.  When enough time had passed he decided to head up the stairs.  When he opened the door he was shocked.

There stood Liz in the nightie he loved best.  The shade was drawn, candles were burning on the dresser and music was playing softly.  “Lucky Spencer, may I have this dance?” she asked softly.  Not sure he trusted his voice he simply nodded and moved into her arms.  They danced like for a long time.  Finally Lucky pulled away and said, “I love you so much, Elizabeth Webber.”  Before she could respond he brought his lips down on hers and they shared a searing kiss.

The kiss seemed to make Liz melt.  She felt like she was floating and like she never wanted to come back to earth.  When she felt Lucky’s tongue tentatively touch hers she sighed and responded in kind.  She ran her fingers through Lucky’s hair and tilted her head to deepen the kiss.
Lucky met the challenge and tightened his embrace pressing his body closer to his.  He felt like he would never get enough of her.  He couldn’t get close enough.  He wanted her in every way, but he refused to rush her.  He was surprised to feel her fingers tentatively work their way under his shirt and had to put himself in check.  The feel of Liz’s fingers on his bare skin was almost more than he could take.  Lucky pulled out of the embrace.

“What is it?”  Liz was disappointed to lose contact with Lucky.  “I don’t want to rush you, and if you keep that up this may go further than you are ready for.  Liz smiled.  Why was he so sweet and considerate of her?  He was right of course, she wasn’t ready to take their relationship to the next level tonight and she loved him for thinking of her.  “I love you Lucas Lorenzo Spencer, Jr.  I don’t know what I would do without you.”

Lucky smiled and said “How about we just lie down and go to sleep like we did last night?”  With that he touched his lips briefly to hers and led her to the bed.

The man saw the silhouetted figures kiss in the window.  “Tomorrow, Spencer, tomorrow” was all he said as he watched.

Chapter 24

Sarah was walking from her Gram’s to the high school.  She was thinking about what a wonderful time she had last night.  She felt like her life was changing for the better.  She was over Nikolas and didn’t care that he had feelings for Robin.  She was a new person.  Her relationship with Liz was improving and she couldn’t wait to be her friend.

Gram had been waiting up for her when Reginald had dropped her off last night.  She had tried to pry for information but Sarah was rather vague about her evening, wanted the moments of the previous evening to be hers.  She was taking her first lesson from Lizzie and staying true to herself.  She had actually left the house without primping in her usual fashion.  She did not look perfect and she didn’t care!  No one would care, and neither did she, she realized.  Another thing she learned from her sister, she mused.

Sarah was looking forward to her meeting with Liz later that afternoon.  It would be the first time in recent memory that they had done something together just the two of them.  Sarah was looking forward to enjoying her new found relationship with her sister and hoped that Liz felt the same way.

After she went by the school to meet Mr. Williams she would go to the mall and get a hair cut.  She didn’t need such a high maintenance style.  She just wanted something simple that brought out her flattering features (and no more perfect bangs!!). She had a smile on her face as she rounded the corner and climbed the steps to the school.

There was a note on the door as she climbed the steps.  She saw it was for Lucky and she took it.
LUCKY, MEET ME IN MY CLASSROOM (B2110).
     -MR. WILLIAMS.
Sarah smiled to herself.  Just like the History teacher she remembered.  Always working on something.  “Never could stand still,” she said to herself with a smile as she turned the doorknob.

Those were Sarah Webber’s last words as the explosion ripped through Port Charles High School and sent her flying into a tree across the street.  She was killed instantly.

In a classroom adjacent to the main building of PC High School students were taking the SAT exam.  At precisely 11:00 am the windows shattered and the building shook sending flying glass and debris into the students and the proctor of the exam.  Amid the screams Elizabeth Webber lay unconscious on the floor with a bookshelf on top of her.  No one helped her in the panic to exit the building.

Chapter 25

“Over here!  We need some help over here!”

Paul had been working for Mr. Morgan a little over a week and he took his job seriously.  He was supposed to protect this girl, and that was what he was going to do.  When he heard the explosion he immediately ran into the classroom he had seen the girl go into.  He did not even know her name or the reason Mr. Morgan wanted a guard on her.  All he knew was that if he didn’t save her he would be fired.  The scene in front of him was appalling.  At first he didn’t even see her, then he walked further into the room.  What he saw then horrified him, her legs were being crushed by a bookcase almost twice her size.  He would never know how he did it, but he walked over and lifted the case off of her.  He noticed that she had a cut on her head and it looked like her leg was broken.  Beyond that, he couldn’t tell.  He knew from television that he shouldn’t move her in case there were back or neck injuries so he left her where she was and ran out of the room.

Frank Scanlon, the paramedic who had taken Liz to the hospital to be treated for shock heard the call for help.  He turned and grabbed some supplies and ran towards the voice.  His assistant was still treating the minor cuts and bruises.  5 people including the janitor had already been transferred to GH.  No teachers were in the building at the time of the explosion, only various proctors and students taking the SAT.  So far the injuries had been fairly minor.  Frank had an ominous feeling that was about to change. “Okay man, calm down” he said as he reached a very anxious Paul.

Frank followed the man into the classroom and immediately saw Liz on the floor.  She looked vaguely familiar to him, but he couldn’t place her. Her pulse was faint and her breathing shallow.  He checked her pupils.  “I know this girl, I just can’t place her,” he said almost to himself.  “Do you know who she is?” Frank asked the man next to him.  “No sir,” Paul didn’t want to implicate Jason in any way so he tried to say as little as possible.   “Ok, wait here with her while I get a stretcher and some help.”  When Frank exited the room so did Paul.  He knew the girl would be taken care of and he needed to report to Mr. Morgan right away.

Across the campus of the high school the body of Sarah Webber was being loaded onto an ambulance.  Mac Scorpio was on the scene as were the bomb squad and a frenzy of reporters.  “A bomb has claimed the life of at least one person and countless others have been injured.  10 people have been transported to General Hospital and others are being treated here on the scene.   Port Charles High School will never be the same.”

The television was on, but Lucky hadn’t really been paying attention he was remembering how Liz had looked the night before.  He was remembering how good she felt in his arms when they danced and how good her mouth tasted under his.  Then he heard the words Port Charles High School and he was riveted to the television.  As soon as the reporter stopped talking and the camera panned the scene Lucky was out the door ignoring the ringing of his cell phone.  Suddenly his happy memories of the night before vanished to be replaced by a sick sense of dread.

In another room across town a man was watching the television with an evil grin on his face. When she learned of Lucky Spencer’s death she would need him.  He began counting the minutes until his plan came to fruition.

Chapter 26

Lucky ran to the school.  He had to find Liz.  He had to see that she was ok.  He was running into the blasted building when Mac Scorpio grabbed him.  “Slow down there kid, you can’t just go charging in there, you could destroy the evidence.”  Lucky struggled against Mac, “Let me go man! I need to find Elizabeth.”

Mac felt a jab of pain for the boy he was restraining.  “Lucky, calm down.  We know where Elizabeth is.”  He saw Lucky’s face pale and he felt the fear and pain enter his body.  “Wh- What do you mean ‘you know where she is’.”  Mac just stood there looking at him.  He was about to tear his world apart and he didn’t quite know where to begin.  “Lucky, Elizabeth has been transferred to GH with a head injury and a broken leg.  At this time they suspect a concussion but are not ruling out internal injuries.”  Lucky felt as if he had been hit by a big rig.  All of the air went out of his lungs and he could not catch his breath.  He felt the single tear as it made it’s way down his cheek.

He looked at Mac and could tell there was more.  “What else?” he asked in a voice he didn’t recognize as his own.  Mac couldn’t quite find the right words and hoped he was being as sensitive as possible.  “The fatality, it…it was Sarah.  I’m so sorry Lucky.  I wish I had some good news for you.”  Mac led Lucky to a waiting police car.  Taggart was standing there talking to Garcia.  When he saw Mac approaching with a distraught Lucky he instantly softened.  “Take him to the hospital and alert Mrs. Webber about today’s events.”  Mac gave the order knowing that Taggart would remain the epitome of professionalism.

Just as the two were getting in the car a patrolman rounded the corner.  He had someone with him.  “Yo, Commissioner!  We found him running at the track.  Claims not to have heard the explosion or not to have seen anything amiss.  We found this in his bag though.”  He said holding up a wad of wiring that looked like it could have been used to make a bomb.”  Mac took the paraphernalia and shook his head.  Just then Lucky looked up.  It was Mr. Murty.  Instantly Lucky was in a rage.

“You A$$#*&%!!  How could you do this?  When will you stop?!!” He was lunging at Mr. Murty.  He got in one solid punch to the jaw when Taggart caught up with him and pulled him away.  “Easy kid, if he really did this he will pay, you don’t need to go to jail to.  Lucky just stared at Mr. Murty.  “Mac, are you going to arrest him this time?.”  Mac had been investigating Murty and was almost ready to arrest him on the evidence he had gathered.  He had wanted Dara’s opinion on it first, but now he felt he didn’t need it.  “Theodore Murty, you are under arrest for the rape and stalking of Liz Webber and the murder of Sarah Webber.”  When Mac finished reading his rights Mr. Murty began to argue his innocence but his arguments only fell on deaf ears.  “Get this creep out of my sight” Mac said to the patrolman.  He turned to Taggart and said, “Get him out of here, he needs to be with his loved ones.”

When they drove away Mac took out his phone and dialed a number.  The phone was answered on the second ring. “Yo, Luke’s. Luke speaking.”

Chapter 27

In a small room in a dingy motel a man was watching television.  He was grinning ear to ear.  The news had said that the blast had killed one and injured several.  He knew he had been taking a risk by bombing the school when his angel was there, but he had to get rid of that annoying Spencer kid.  Though the media was not releasing the name of the fatality until family could be notified he knew in his heart that it was Lucky.  The news reported that an arrest had been made.

He looked around the room.  Though it was not as fancy as his quarters it had served his purpose well.  This room was where he had planned everything.  There were pictures of Liz everywhere, several had been cut into weird shapes due to the fact that Lucky had been in them.  He didn’t mind though, he considered the cutting of the photographs a cleansing process.  It was, in an ironic way, a practice ritual for the real cleansing that had occurred that morning at the school.  On the table next to the bed were all kinds of wires and explosive devices.  He had a video camera sitting on the television recording all of the details of the explosion given in the news reports from the local station.  He wanted to have the moment when they announced the death of Lucky Spencer forever so that he could relive it over and over.  This was his crowning achievement and he wanted it forever captured.

He had spent weeks planning the day’s events and their aftermath.  It had been easy to find out when Liz’s finals were due, he had just used his connections with her friends.  The phone call to Kelly’s from Mr. Williams had been staged, he had loved that part because he had gotten to hear his angel’s voice.  He had known that Liz would not be able to turn in her paper at the time he specified and that she would naturally turn to Lucky.  It had worked like a charm.

When he had discovered that his angel suspected Mr. Murty of the incident in the park it hurt.  He was sure it had been as special for her as it was for him and that she would recognize that it had been him and feel the same bond he now felt.  He buried the hurt and decided to come up with a way to use it to his advantage.  He came to the realization that Elizabeth would never truly be his unless she felt the man in the park had been punished.  He decided right then that Mr. Murty would be punished, thus clearing a path to his angel.

He prided himself as being a man who did his research and did it well.  He learned that at precisely 10:00 every Saturday morning one Theodore Murty wet jogging through Port Charles, stopping first by the track at PC High to drop off his sports bag supplies with water, a mat for crunches and other essentials necessary for the final stages of his work out.  He had trailed him twice and found that he usually made it back to the track by 10:45 am and did his series of sprints, crunches, push-ups, and pull-ups.  He usually completed this part of the work out wearing headphones for motivation.  That morning he had planted wires like the ones in the bomb in the side pocket of his sports bag.  When he heard that an arrest had been made he knew all of his hard work had paid off.

He was interrupted from his reverie when his cell-phone began to ring.  “Hello…yes sir…no I understand…I will be there in fifteen minutes…Ok sir, see you then.”  He hung up the phone and thought, it was time to go be a model citizen and employee again.  As he closed the door to the room the reporter on television announced that Sarah Webber, age 16 was found dead at the scene of the bombing.
