A Love to Last a Lifetime 17

Chapter 86

Liz opened her eyes and thought she saw Emily coming towards her, then even more absurdly she saw Lucky running up behind her.  She sighed and closed her eyes again.  AJ had torn her shirt off and was now working on her jeans.  She was thinking about Lucky and tuning out the reality of being raped again when she felt AJ’s body slump against hers.  She opened her eyes and saw that he was lying on top of her unmoving.  She felt him being removed from her body and saw Lucky’s tear stained face.  “Lucky, it wasn’t a dream.”

Lucky looked over to Emily who was weilding the two-by-four Liz had tried to use on AJ and mouthed a silent thank you.  “Didn’t I promise that I wouldn’t let anything happen to you?”  He bent and lifted her into his arms.  He gently placed his jacket over her shoulders to conceal her bare chest.  “I love you Elizabeth, I don’t know what I would have done if I had lost you.”

“I love you too Lucky.”  She moved out of his embrace and approached Emily.  “Thanks Em, I knew you could do it.  You got them here in time.”

Emily wiped the tears from her face and hugged her friend.  “I’m sorry about your nose” was all she could manage to say.

Lucky took charge.  “OK guys, we need to get out of here. Emily you lead the way, we are going out the way you did before.”

“What about him?”  Liz indicated AJ’s body.  Lucky wrapped his arm around her shoulder.  “Don’t you worry, he won’t be going anywhere.”  He looked over at Emily, “Alright, do your stuff.”

Emily took the cap gun she had in her pocket and fired it three times.  “Good thing you saved this, huh Lucky” she laughed as they made their way toward the ladder.

“I never throw anything away.  I didn’t think it would be used here though.”  Lucky almost laughed at the fact that his childhood cap gun had just been used in a real life threatening situation.  He shivered at the fact that this far surpassed anything his juvenile imagination had conjured all those years ago.  He wrapped one arm around Liz and one around Emily and the three of them made their way toward the ladder.

None of them heard AJ get up and follow them.

<Outside>

Luke took the cigar out of his mouth and smiled.  “There’s the signal everyone.  Fifteen minutes and all hell break’s loose.”  He looked over to Jason.  “Alright man, do the honors.”

Jason pressed the detonator and watched the digital read out count down fifteen minutes.  Mac and V were already heading to the car to radio for backup.  When that thing blew he wanted to be covered in case by some fluke AJ got out.

<Inside>

They had just reached the ladder when AJ made his move.  Emily was half way up the ladder and Liz and Lucky were waiting at the bottom.  He had heard Lucky instruct Liz to go next, but he wasn’t going to let that happen.  He moved with lightning speed and grabbed Liz from behind and hit Lucky over the head with the two-by-four.  Liz screamed and Emily turned.  “NO!!” She screamed.

<Outside>

“We all need to back away from here.  Only 14 minutes left.  AJ is incapacitated and the others should be out soon.”  He smiled as he lit his cigar.  “Another Spencer plan goes off without a hitch.”  Jason, Nikolas, and Luke all turned away from the bomb.

They were a few steps away when Nikolas stopped in his tracks.  Did you hear that?  That was Emily.  Something’s wrong.”  He ran back towards the entrance to the sewer and was gone before anyone could stop him.  Luke was close on his heals, but Jason grabbed him.  “Luke, no, something is wrong down there, it isn’t going to do anyone any good if we all go down there to die.  We have to hope they get out.”

Luke struggled against Jason’s hold.  “My son is down there man!  I have to get him out.  I just got him back, I can’t lose him now.”  Luke broke free and left a frustrated Jason on the street.  Jason sighed and knew what he had to do.  He picked up his cell phone and dialed the number Luke had told him to use in an emergency.  “Mrs. Spencer?…This is Jason Morgan…”

Thirty seconds later Jason hung up his phone.  Luke had wanted Laura to be notified if things got hairy.  Jason was sorry he got the job.  She had wanted to come down immediately.  They had to compromise.  Jason agreed to call her every five minutes until it was over.  12 and a half minutes he thought to himself.

He walked over to Mac and V.  “What happened Morgan?”  Mac was kicking himself for listening to Luke Spencer, now he had six of Port Charles’ citizens in danger including a Cassadine and two Quartermaines.  He was wondering how he was going to explain this one to the mayor.   He felt his anger building and turned on Jason.  “I knew this was a bad idea, why would the police commissioner team up with a known mobster?  How did I ever get talked into this?”

Jason kept his face expressionless, he knew Mac was only worried, but it didn’t make it any easier.  “Look man, the point is we are in this now.  We have”, he checked his watch, “12 minutes to figure out how to get them out of there.”

Chapter 87

Lucky lay on the wet cement unconscious.  Emily was kneeling by his side trying to revive him.  AJ had taken Liz in the opposite direction and the light from their flashlight was no longer visible.  Nikolas rounded the corner and nearly tripped over Emily.  “Nikolas!  They went that way!  Hurry, we can’t have much time left!”

Nikolas paused and saw Luke running down the tunnel towards them with a gun in his hand  “What happened here?” Luke looked at his son and dropped to his knees letting his weapon fall to his side.  “Cowboy?  Come on Cowboy, you need to wake up.  Elizabeth needs you.”  Luke was trying all tactics to get through to his son and it seemed he was successful.  Lucky began to stir and slowly opened his eyes.  Luke looked at Nikolas and indicated Emily.  “Why don’t you get her out of here.  We only have about eleven minutes left.  Please just go.”

Nikolas wanted nothing more than to get his beloved to safety, but he wanted to make sure everything was under control first.  “Are you sure he is going to be alright for backup.”  Nikolas couldn’t believe he was asking if Luke Spencer needed backup, how things could change.

Just as Luke was about to answer Lucky sat up and grabbed the gun Luke had abandoned.  Before he could be stopped Lucky was running down the dark tunnel in the direction AJ had taken Liz.  Luke cursed and turned to Nikolas.  “I’ll handle this, you just get her out of here!”

Nikolas only nodded and helped Emily to her feet, pulling her against him when she got there.  “We have to get out of here, we only have 10 minutes.”  Quickly he led her towards the ladder and helped her up.

Jason was waiting at the top and when he saw his sister emerge with Nikolas he immediately dialed his cell phone.  “Mrs. Spencer…Yes, I have some news…Nikolas is safe…I know it is wonderful…No, I’m sorry, neither Luke nor Lucky has returned yet…Yes of course…I’ll be in touch.”  Jason turned to Nikolas then.  “You need to move away.  Mac and V are around the corner.”

Nikolas nodded and started to escort Emily away, she stopped and shook his arm off.  “Jason what about you.  You can’t be this close when the blast goes off, you could die.”

“Don’t worry, Em.  I know what I am doing.  I’ll know when Luke and Lucky are safe.”  Jason reassuringly hugged his sister.  “You just go with Nikolas.”  Once they were gone Jason quietly entered the sewer to provide backup for his partner.  He glanced at his watch, nine and a half minutes left.

<Inside>

Lucky ignored the throbbing in his head.  He had to get to Liz before it was too late.  If she was still down here when the bomb went off she would die.  He was running down the tunnels not knowing where they went.  He used his instincts and prayed that AJ still had Liz down there.  Then he heard it.  Liz's voice.

“You will never get away with this, Lucky will find you.”  Lucky smiled at her bravery.  Then he heard AJ’s response and his blood boiled.  “No one is going to find you.  I have waited so long for this moment and nothing is going to spoil it now.  We were destined to be together, and whether we live or die, together we will be.”  AJ laughed a dry humorless laugh that made the hair on the back of Lucky’s neck stand up.  That was all he could take as he moved into position.

“I don’t think so, AJ.”  Lucky slowly approached, the gun hidden in the belt of his pants.  Lucky knew that if necessary he could retrieve it and fire a round in less than ten seconds.  His father had taught him that.

A startled AJ whipped Liz around and Lucky saw that he was holding a knife to her neck.  There was no way he could get off a clean shot without hitting Liz first.  Lucky did a quick mental calculation in his mind.  There couldn’t be more than eight minutes left.  Finally he decided on risking it.  He slowly raised his gun and leveled it on AJ.  “I think you may want to re-think that my friend.”

AJ only laughed.  “If you try and shoot me you are going to hit your precious Elizabeth here.  You wouldn’t do that.”  AJ was over-confident, and suddenly Lucky saw his weakness.

“Oh I wouldn’t huh?  I wouldn’t be so sure.”  Lucky raised the gun and released the safety.   He made eye contact with Liz praying she would understand.

She did.  She acted quickly.  “Lucky, No!”  She stomped on AJ’s foot as hard as she could causing him to wince in pain and release her just as she heard the shot ring through the air.  She felt the bullet as it whizzed by her cheek into AJ’s upper arm.

She fell to the ground and watched as Lucky calmly walked toward AJ who was grasping his shoulder and yelling at Lucky.  “I’ll get you Spencer.  This isn’t over yet!”  Lucky had heard enough.

“Oh yeah, Quartermaine, you’re right about that.  This is far from over.  I am far from finished with you.  A superficial gunshot wound is far better than you deserve, and I am going to make sure that it doesn’t stop there.”  In a swift movement Lucky grabbed AJ by the throat and lifted him off the ground.  “I should take that knife you had at Elizabeth’s throat and castrate you with it.  You don’t deserve any better after what you have done to her and everyone else in this town.  After I castrate you, I think I will shove your member down your throat.  How would you like that?”  Lucky watched the fear enter AJ’s eyes and he squeezed AJ’s throat just a little harder.  “Well?  What do you think?”

AJ gasped and tried to shake his head.  “Oh you don’t like that idea huh?  Alright, first I’ll bash your head into the wall.”  With that Lucky proceeded to make good on his threat.  He forced AJ’s head into the cement wall not once but three times.  On the third pass he felt his skull crack and felt the warm stickiness of fresh blood on his hands.  He released AJ and watched as he slid to the floor.  Lucky picked up AJ’s discarded knife and dangled in front of him.  “Now for that castration.”  Liz’s screams for him to stop went unheeded.

Lucky saw the wild fear in AJ’s eyes as he moved to unzip his pants.  “Cowboy, No!”   Luke broke into Lucky’s thoughts.  “If you do that, it makes you no better that he is.  Let him go, it’s all over.”  Lucky released AJ and watched as he slumped to the floor and lost consciousness.

Lucky dropped the knife and turned toward Liz.  She was on her feet and in his arms in no time.  He met his father’s eyes over her head and nodded.  “We need to get out of here, how much longer?”

Jason rounded the corner.  “One minute, follow me, there is another exit this way.”  Before he turned Jason gave a passing glance at AJ’s lifeless body.  “You’ve reached the end of the road, brother dear.”  They all turned and began their climb to safety.  They were half way up the ladder when the blast went off sending a flood of water their way.

<Mac and V’s car>

Nikolas was nervously pacing.  There was no sign of Luke, Lucky, Jason or Elizabeth.  He glanced at his watch.  “Thirty seconds” he said to no one and everyone.  He grabbed Emily’s hand and closed his eyes.

The blast shook the ground and Emily burried her head in Nikolas’ shoulder.  Mac cursed and when several minutes passed, he picked up his cell phone.  Someone needed to call Mrs. Spencer.  Poor Laura.  He dialed the number and waited for the call to connect.  It was picked up on the first ring.  “Mrs. Spencer…Mac Scorpio here.”

Chapter 88 – FINAL CHAPTER

Laura knew right away when it was Mac’s voice she heard instead of Jason’s that the news was not good.  Instead of listening she hung up the phone and ran out the door.  There was no way she was going to hear about her son’s and husband’s deaths over the phone.  It would only take her five minutes to get to Kelly’s if she hurried.

“Hello…Hello…Laura!  Damn!”  Mac slammed his phone shut and looked toward the sewer.  The bomb squad and the fire department were working on containing the flood and repairing the damage to the storm drains.  Jason had been right, the damage to the surrounding area was minimal, but the explosives had wreaked havoc on the sewer outside of Kelly’s.  It would be some time before it would be fixed.  Mac dreaded Ruby’s reaction, but he would handle it.  He motioned for V to follow him as he headed towards the area where they had set the explosives earlier.  When the reached the fire inspector V was the one who spoke first.

“Inspector Lewis, how does it look.  Could anyone have survived being trapped down there after the blast.”

“Detective Androwski, these explosives were rigged to ensure that no one got out.  Now, I can tell you that survival depends on how far down the tunnel and how close to an exit someone was.  Assuming exactly the right conditions, someone could make it out of there, the chances are slim though.”  V nodded, “we appreciate your candor, Inspector.”  V turned to Mac and let the Inspector return to his work.

Mac was berating himself for getting talked into this plan.  “How did I get myself into this one, V?  I never should have allowed Jason Morgan and Luke Spencer to call the shots.”

“Mac, you can’t blame yourself.  We all knew the risks.  We have to take comfort in the fact that everyone knew what they were getting into.”  V reached out and rested her hand on Mac’s shoulder.  She was about to say more when she heard raised voices coming from the car.  She looked up and saw Laura Spencer approaching her son.  “Mrs. Spencer is here.”  Mac turned and watched her reunion with her son.

“Nikolas!  Nikolas.  Thank God you’re alright, I don’t know what I would have done if I had lost you.”  Laura threw her arms around her son and let the tears flow.  Nikolas had stiffened initially, but he relaxed against his mother.  She had been concerned for him.  She wasn’t letting her grief over the loss of her husband and her other son cloud her relief for his survival.  He hugged her back.  “Thank you mother” he said quietly.

Laura heard him call her mother and melted against him.  She hadn’t lost everything, she still had Nikolas and LuLu, but she needed to know the details.  “Nikolas, can you tell me what happened, I need to know.”

Nikolas understood.  He looked to Emily and took her hand for support.  “Liz and Emily were kidnapped and taken down into the sewers by AJ Quartermaine…”  Laura listened intently as her son explained everything.  He explained how they discovered that AJ was Liz’s rapist too late to warn her, how Emily was taken and how the plan to catch AJ was formed.  “We were all down in the sewer.  AJ had knocked Lucky unconscious and taken Liz.  Luke revived Lucky and Lucky took off with his gun.  Luke insisted that I take Emily to safety, that he would get Lucky and Liz out.”  Laura gasped as she realized that Luke hadn’t wanted her to lose both of her sons.  Nikolas spoke again “when we reached the top of the ladder, Jason sent us over here.  He must have gone in because I haven’t seen him since.”

Nikolas finished with tears in his eyes.  Laura met his gaze and they embraced.  Emily looked from mother to son.  A strange feeling came over her and she turned to look down the street in the opposite direction.  “Oh my God!  Nikolas!  Laura!  Look!”  She pointed down the street and it was just moments before they saw what she did.  Luke, Lucky, Liz and Jason were walking towards them.

Mac and V heard the commotion and turned in time to see the survivors.  “Thank God!”  Mac turned to V and the two embraced tears flowing.

<General Hospital-two hours later>

Lucky was pacing his hospital room.  He was thinking back to the reunion with Nik, Em and his mother.  It had been one of the happiest moments of his life.  He had his family back with an added member, a brother.  Now all he wanted to do was get out of the hospital and start living his life again.  The doctor had wanted to keep him over night for observation because of the head injury AJ had inflicted regardless of the fact that there was no evidence of a concussion.  Jason, Liz and Luke had been released out of the ER and he had wanted to go with them, instead he would be spending the night in this room, alone.

Luke and Laura were obviously on their way to reconciliation, and Nikolas and Emily were celebrating survival.  Jason was home with Robin by now and Mac had finally made it home to a relived Felicia.  There were still no signs of AJ’s body, but the fire inspector said there was a chance that his remains may have been carried out to sea and may never be found.  Lucky did not like that, but he rationalized that no one could have survived the flood he had witnessed.  Now all he wanted was to hold his precious Elizabeth in his arms.  He hated the fact that he would have to wait, even if it was just one more night.

Lucky was just reaching the depths of his self-pity when he sensed that he was no longer alone.  He turned and saw the woman of his dreams standing in the doorway.  “How did you know?”

Liz smiled and her eyes filled with tears.  “I knew because I couldn’t survive the night alone either.  You’re mother tried to get me to come home with her, but I told her I wanted to get back to my own bed.  I think she knew I would come to you though, I saw it in her eyes.”  Liz made her way from the door and into Lucky’s arms.

“I don’t know what I would have done if I had lost you tonight.  I love you so much.”  Lucky’s tears mingled with Liz’s and his world was made whole when he heard her say “I love you too” and he felt her lips softly touch his own.

“Promise me we will always be together, Lucky.”  Liz was resting her head on Lucky’s shoulder.

“I’ll never let you go Elizabeth, don’t you know that our love is a love to last a lifetime?”  Lucky said in a husky voice.

<Epilogue – Two weeks later>

Liz walked into the room she and Lucky still shared.  Even though things were better with his family Lucky had still refused to move back home.  Though initially hurt at their son’s decision Luke and Laura had understood.   “Hey Lucky, you all ready for the first day?”

Lucky turned to Liz with air of nonchalance.  “First day of what my darling?”  Lucky knew that Liz was excited to get back into a normal routine.  “The first day of school silly!  Nik and Em are already downstairs waiting.”

Lucky laughed.  “Come here for a minute first, I have something I want to give you.”

“Lucky, I don’t need anything, I have you and that’s what matters.”  Liz walked up to Lucky and wrapped her arms around his neck.

“I guess you don’t want this then,” Lucky laughed as he held out the single red rose.  “I wonder if Emily would want it, I’ll go check.”  Lucky peeled Liz’s arms off his shoulders and headed towards the door.

Liz reached him just in time.  “Oh no you don’t mister!”

Lucky turned around and swung her into his arms.  “The rose is in honor of the first day of the rest of our lives together, Liz.  I love you.”

“I love you too, Lucky.  More than you will ever know.”  Liz gently touched her lips to Lucky’s.

Lucky wanted to deepen the kiss, but instead he said, “We shouldn’t keep my brother waiting any longer.”  Liz smiled every time she had heard him call Nikolas his brother, it warmed her heart.

“Alright, Spencer, I’ll race you!”  With that she took off down the stairs toward the rest of their lives.

On a boat off the coast of Cuba a man stood staring at a worn and tattered picture.   “We will meet again, my angel” he said as he placed the photo of Elizabeth in his coat pocket.

The End…
