<Emergency Waiting area>
Robin ran into the ER looking for Mac. She spotted him immediately speaking to Dara in the corner. She was waiting patiently for him when V approached her. “Robin, why don’t you sit down. I can tell you what I know.”
V felt as though she had been going non-stop since Murty’s suicide and knew that until whoever was behind this terror was captured things would not get any better. She decided to make the best of the situation and comfort Robin. “Jason has lost a tremendous amount of blood. He is in a coma, however there was minimal internal damage. Apparently the first wound missed his liver by a fraction of an inch and the second wound missed the lung by the same fraction. Whoever did this knew where to aim but couldn’t quite make contact. Unfortunately the blood loss was quite significant. He is in a coma, the doctors can’t say when, or if he is going to wake up.”
Robin listened and her heart sank. She had been aware of the dangers of Jason’s work, but never thought it would come to this. “Can I see him?” V smiled and stood, let me go check with the nurse on duty.”
<Lucky’s room>
Lucky opened his eyes and scanned the room. He stopped when his eyes found Liz’s sleeping form. She was holding the locket he had given her and was fast asleep. She looked so beautiful and peaceful he knew that he could watch her for eternity.
As though on cue, Liz’s eyes fluttered open. She looked around the room and Lucky saw everything come back to her. The relaxed look on her face was quickly replaced by a worried frown and she turned her head towards the bed where she knew she would find Lucky. To her surprise he was awake and smiling at her. She sighed with relief and returned the smile. She unfolded herself from the chair and joined him on the bed. As soon as she was seated Lucky he took her hand in his and raised it to his lips. Liz nearly melted at his touch, it was so good to have him back, she knew she would cherish every moment they were given. “Lucky, I’m sorry I pushed you away. If it hadn’t been for me you wouldn’t be here right now.” The tears came and began to run down her cheeks.
Lucky hated to see her cry. “Liz, this isn’t your fault, I understand why you did what you did, I just hope you know that you know that I would never hurt you and just want to be there for you.”
Liz was crying in earnest now. How could she have been so stupid? She knew Lucky wouldn’t hurt her, but she couldn’t bring herself to face anyone while she was reading that note from Mr. Murty. She still didn’t know if she could live with the guilt of his death on her conscious, but she was trying. “Oh Lucky, I know that. I love you so much and the whole time you were unconscious all I wanted was to be able to tell you that one more time. I love you and don’t know where I would be without you in my life. Promise me you will never leave me.”
Lucky wiped the tears away from Liz’s cheeks. His heart felt as though it was going to hammer right out of his chest. He couldn’t say anything he just pulled Liz towards him and met her lips with his. When her lips parted in response to his and he heard her sigh he knew he had finally come home. When the kiss was over they broke apart and Lucky said “I love you with all my heart Elizabeth Webber.”
Chapter 64
Nikolas was pacing the floor in the hallway outside of the intensive care unit at General Hospital. He had heard about Jason’s stabbing on the radio on the way to pick up Emily for their date and knew that she would be here instead of at home getting ready to go out. Nikolas sighed, it seemed that he was spending an awful lot of time here over the last few days. When Lucky woke up he thought he was home free, now it seemed that Emily’s brother was in critical condition. He looked up as he heard the doors open and saw a shell-shocked Emily approach him. Whe she spotted him she smiled weakly.
Oh, Nikolas, I’m so sorry. I forgot all about our date. I meant to call you, I just…” Nikolas cut her off before she could continue. “Do you think I blame you. I heard the news on the radio on my way to pick you up and knew where to find you. I completely understand, and since you stood by me while my brother was in trouble, I am going to do the same for you. He reached out and wrapped his arms around Emily. How come he never noticed how beautiful she was before?
Emily melted into Nikolas’ embrace and reveled in the feel of his arms around her. If only the circumstances of the hug were different. He was only hugging her to make her feel better, not because he had any feelings for her. She sighed and pulled away. “Thanks for being here Nikolas, I really appreciate it. You don’t have to stay though, I imagine you have a hundred other more important things to be doing.”
Nikolas tightened his hold on Emily, did she really think he would leave her? “Em, I am here to stay, my plans for the night were with you, and I intend to honor them.”
Emily sighed with relief and despite Jason’s condition
she smiled.
<PCPD>
Mac and V were sitting in Mac’s office comparing notes starting with Lucky’s accident. The forensic lab had the results on the vehicle and V was reading the report. “Mac, listen to this, it appears that the break line in Lucky’s car was severed, there were no fingerprints other than Lucky’s though throughout the vehicle.” Mac wasn’t surprised at the news, “I figured as much, it was just too coincidental that Lucky’s accident happened so closely on the heals of Murty’s suicide.”
Mac was reading the surveillance reports from the cops he had tailing Jason and his men. They were, as he had expected inconclusive. Jason and his men could spot a cop a mile away and were good at losing them when they weren’t wanted. Mac learned long ago to accept the fact that he would only know what Jason wanted him to, and now he didn’t even know for sure what that was. He resolved to meet with Reynaldo the next day. “V what do you think about this theory? Jason had been acting strange for the past several days. Every time I tried to bring up the subject of Liz’s attacker he came up with nothing but excuses yet he said he wanted to help. I think he knew who it was and confronted him. Then he was stabbed as a result. Maybe we should take a trip to the Bluff Top Inn and see what the manager knows.”
V and Mac left the station and headed for the Inn where Jason Morgan had been stabbed. Mac knew better than to approach one of his men without first talking to Reynaldo. It was no secret that they didn’t like cops.
<Lucky’s room>
Liz had been in Lucky’s room almost non stop for the entire evening. It was just like it had always been, easy conversation and comfortable silences. Liz couldn’t believe that she was actually talking to her love again, she couldn’t wait until he got out of the hospital so that she could have him all to herself.
“Lucky when did Monica say she was going to let you come home? I miss you so much and want to be able to wake up next to you again.” Lucky smiled, he had been thinking the same thing. He felt well enough to go now, but he knew Monica wouldn’t release him at least until his most recent test results came in sometime tomorrow. “I’m hoping she’ll spring me tomorrow. I can’t wait to get home either, we have a lot of catching up to do.” Lucky smiled that irresistable smile that always made Liz’s insides flip flop.
She leaned in to give him a quick kiss but to her surprise he grabbed her and deepened the kiss. She moaned and turned her head slightly to give Lucky better access. Lucky proceeded to make love to her mouth. She moved her hands up his chest and was rewarded with a groan of satisfaction from Lucky. Lucky’s hands made their way under Liz’s blouse when she broke the kiss. “Lucky, we should save this for when we get you home, this isn’t exactly the most private place. I would hate for someone to walk in on us.”
Though disappointed, Lucky knew she was right. “I know, I just miss you and I want to show you how much I love you.” Liz smiled. “Don’t you realize that you do that every day?” Liz smiled as she stood. “I should be getting out of here, the nurse should be back any minute and I kind of wanted to sleep in my own bed tonight so that I am rested when you come home to me.” Lucky nodded, he was getting tired himself and knew that Liz must be exhausted. “Good night my girl. I’ll see you in the morning.”
Liz smiled she bent and kissed his cheek lightly, “Can’t wait. See you then.” She turned and walked out of the room.
<ICU waiting area>
AJ was waiting outside the ICU unit. He knew it was expected of him to make an appearance at his brother’s door which was convenient because he needed to make sure Jason wasn’t going to wake up any time soon. He was about to go inside when he looked up and saw his angel approaching. She was so beautiful. He smiled eagerly and waited until she reached him.
“Hello Elizabeth, what brings you by here?” He wanted to reach out and touch her, but he knew that without an excuse that would look odd. “I’m just here to see Emily before I call it a night. Is she around?” AJ was elated perhaps he could lure her out of the building and they could be alone. “I think she left with Nikolas. They may have gone to the cafeteria or something, would you like to go check, I would be happy to go with you, maybe we could join them for some coffee."
Liz nodded. As they were about to leave Nikolas and Emily rounded the corner and nearly bumped into them. AJ was fuming inside, his chance to be alone with Liz was again ruined. Soon he promised himself he would have her all to himself. He slipped away as Liz began an animated conversation with her friends.
Chapter 65
<Spencer Home>
Luke was pacing the floors, he couldn’t believe that Laura didn’t want any part of him. They had a life together one that had seen much more turbulent times than these and she was ready to throw all that away? He was going to wait here until she returned and talk some sense into her. The knock on the door interrupted his thoughts and he grunted in frustration as he went to answer it.
Mac and V were standing there when he answered the door. “What do you want Scorpio?” Luke noted that Mac had not come alone he was with that new lady detective, Luke couldn’t help but think she was quite a looker. “May we come in Spencer, we have some news on your son’s accident.”
Luke reluctantly stepped aside and let them in, he just hoped that they were gone before Laura got back with Lulu and Lesley. He turned towards Mac expectantly and held out his hand to V. “Luke Spencer, I don’t believe we’ve had the pleasure.” V smiled and shook the hand he offered her. “V Androwski, it’s a pleasure Mr. Spencer.” Luke smiled, “Yeah, well we’ll see about that. V huh? What kind of name is that?”
“Cut the bull Spencer, we came to discuss your son, not my detective’s name.” Luke merely looked at Mac waiting for him to get to the point of his visit. “We got the forensic report back on the car Lucky was driving, the brake lines had been cut.”
Luke frowned, “Well commissioner what are you going to do about that? Jason told me that he might have been working with you but now that he is, shall we say, out of commission what are you going to do.”
Luke frustrated Mac to no end, “I was hoping I could get you to talk to Jason’s men, one or more of them has to know something, but without Jason they won’t talk.”
Luke merely smiled. He should have guessed. “I’ll see what I can do, I’ll schedule a meeting with Reynaldo and get back to you, now you can get out of my house. I’m expecting my wife ant the last thing I need when she gets here are cops crawling all over the place.” He looked pointedly at V “Sorry doll, I really wish things could be different.”
Once they were out of ear shot V turned to Mac “What a charming individual.”
<Lucky’s Room>
Lucky was sitting alone in his bed reading and waiting for Liz to come back. She had called and said that she was running late because Ruby needed some last minute help at Kelly’s and the last thing she wanted to do was leave Ruby high and dry.
The door opened and Lucky looked up from his magazine hoping to see Liz walk through it. Instead it was his mother followed by his sister. “Lulu!!” Lucky was genuinely glad to see the little sister he hadn’t seen in close to 9 months. After Lulu bounded onto his bed and he wrapped his arms around her he shot his mother a warning look over her shoulder. He vaguely remembered her visiting him when he had first woken up. She said she was going to get grandmother and Lulu then move home. Suddenly he remembered that she had also said that she was going to kick Luke out of the house.
Laura watched as her son remembered their earlier conversation. She had yet to explain to Lulu that her father would not be living with them. She only hoped Lucky didn’t say anything about it. “Hello Lucky, you look so much better. How are you feeling.”
For his sister’s sake Lucky tried to remain civil towards his mother. She was making an effort and afterall, and things were on their way to getting better between him and his father. “I am so ready to get out of this place. Liz needs me at home and I want to be there with her.”
Laura’s heart sank when she realized that Lucky no longer considered their house home. She cleared her throat, “Ah LuLu? Why don’t you go outside and keep grandma company, I need to speak to your brother alone for a moment.” At Lulu’s crest fallen face Laura brightened and said in a hushed tone “Maybe you could convince her to take you to the cafeteria for an ice cream.” With that Lulu raced out of the room with a quick hug for her brother first.
“Lucky, you know your father won’t be living at the house any longer, I was hoping you would come to that home when you got out of here.” Lucky had known this was coming. He truly did not want to hurt his mother, but he wasn’t ready to go back there and he didn’t think he would ever be. “Mom, dad and I had a really hard time over the last few months, but thanks to Elizabeth Webber we are working through it. I don’t blame you for what happened, but you have to accept that things are different now. They never will be the same and I never will be ready to move back home. Elizabeth needs me, I am the only family she has left thanks to the psycho that raped her. I have to protect her, she comes first before anything else. I promised her I wouldn’t let anyone hurt her again and I can’t protect her living in your house.”
Though hurt Laura thought she understood. Lucky
was so much like her father had been at his age, so protective of the one
he loves. Laura smiled and sat at the end of his bed. For the
rest of her visit they talked about trivial matters and when she left it
was with a promise from Lucky to bring Elizabeth over for dinner as soon
as possible. She wanted to know this marvel that stole her son’s
heart.
