Living Without Laura

Lucky cut through the park on his way to see Elizabeth. He couldn't
believe summer was almost over. In a few weeks they would be back in
school. He sighed. He really wanted to tell Elizabeth how he felt before
then, but he didn't want to scare her off. If he lost his friendship
with her he would feel lost. Exactly when had it become that important
to him? When had she become the only constant in his life? How long had
she been the first person he thought of each morning and the last before
he fell asleep?

His thoughts were interrupted by a familiar voice from behind him. "I
thought I might find you here."

"Mom."

"I wanted to tell you that I am going to find your father. I have a few
ideas where he might be. We can't go on like this Lucky. We are a
family and we need to act like one. Lulu is staying with your Aunt
Bobbie. If you need anything while I'm gone you can go to her. I
wanted to ask you to visit Lulu occasionally. I don't want her to
think she's being abandoned."

"Is she?"

"Lucky, how can you ask that? When your father and I get back we are
going to have to make some serious changes. No matter what has happened
we all still love each other and deserve to try to work things out." She
glances at her watch, "I have to leave now or I'll miss my plane.
We'll finish this discussion when I get back. I love you Lucky."

"Goodbye."

Laura starts to leave and then impulsively she turns back and hugs him.
"Goodbye, Lucky."

Lucky stands motionless and watches her leave. His eyes fill with tears,
but he tries to shake them off. Finally he pulls himself together and
walks the rest of the way to Audrey's.

Elizabeth looked critically in the mirror. Lucky should be here any
minute and she wanted to look perfect. They were going out to enjoy the
last few days of summer. Emily was having a pool party. She had to admit
that the thought of all those people watching her in a bathing suit
scared her to death. But Lucky really wanted to go. And it would be nice
to try and make some new friends.

She smiled as she heard Lucky climbing onto her roof. Her smile faded as
she saw his expression. He looked so hurt and confused.

"What happened?"

"I saw my mother on the way over here. She's going to look for my
father. She was on her way to the airport."

"Oh Lucky, I'm so sorry."

"It's just that she always manages to make me feel things that I
don't want to feel. I love her, but I still don't understand her.
And I don't know that I'll ever be able to trust her again."

Liz felt so helpless watching him. He always knew how to help her, but
she was at a loss as to how to comfort him. Finally she threw her arms
around him.

Lucky was surprised by the hug. Yet it was strangely comforting. Maybe
he should tell her now. He was still trying to get up the nerve when she
pulled away.

"Don't worry. We will have an awesome time today. It will be good for
both of us to forget about our problems and act like normal teenagers
for once. It's been a long time since I went to a party. Are you ready
to go?"

They steered clear of the subject of his family on the walk to
Emily's, instead focusing on the party. As they neared the
Quartermaine mansion Elizabeth slowed a little.

"What's up Liz?"

"Well, it's just that I'm not exactly Emily's favorite person. And
I was never technically invited. So what if she gets upset when I show
up?"

"Look, I know you and Em aren't close. But she used to be my best
friend. She's been through a lot and has had a lot of problems. I
really think if you both gave each other a chance you'd probably find
you have a lot in common."

"Like what?"

"Like one incredibly intelligent and handsome friend."

"And modest, too"

"Of course!" he said with a smile.

When Emily opened the door a surprised smile lit her face. "Lucky, Liz!
I'm so glad you both came. I was hoping you would. Come on
everyone's out back."

Liz was surprised, but pleased by Emily's reaction. She smiled at the
"I told you so" look on Lucky's face. She relaxed a little and decided
to enjoy herself. When Nikolas Cassadine showed up Liz gave Lucky a
pleading look, and he muttered "I'll try to be nice." They were both
surprised at how much they enjoyed themselves.

As they began to leave Emily pulled Liz aside. "I just wanted to let you
know that I meant what I said earlier. I am glad you came. I was hoping
to get a chance to apologize for the way I acted at the Nurses Ball. I
know it's no excuse, but I was worried about my Dad and trying to
impress Nikolas. I hope you won't hate me forever. I have an amazing
lack of female friends."

Liz smiled, "Then I guess we do have a lot in common," she said with a
laugh, "Don't worry about it. And maybe we could get together
sometime?

Relief flooded Emily's face. "Absolutely."

Lucky raised his eyebrows as Liz walked back to him and asked if he was
ready to go. As they began the walk home he asked, "What was that?"

"That could be the beginning of a new friendship."

"Told ya. You see I may not have told you this yet, but I am a fountain
of useful wisdom. I also happen to be very good at predicting the
future."

"Oh is that so?"

"Yep."

They entered Audrey's house laughing. Their laughter died at the sight
of Audrey and Bobbie sitting on the couch. Bobbie stood up. They could
see that both women had been crying.

"Aunt Bobbie? What are you doing here?"

"Lucky, we need to talk. It's about your mother.
