Jason hung up the phone and looked
over to Robin, who was watching expectantly from the couch. He crossed
the room and sat beside her, placing a hand on her knee. "I'm sorry," he
said.
"Jason! You promised,"
Robin said, pulling away from him.
"It fell through,
Robin. I wasn't expecting this much resistance. But my men aren't willing
to take orders from Moreno. I don't have a choice but to step in."
"But Jason!" Robin
insisted, standing. "You made a promise to keep Michael and me safe. Do
you want to break that promise?"
"Neither of you are
safe with a mafia war going on around you!" Jason shouted. "Someone has
to take order! And if Moreno can't do it, then I guess it means I'll have
to instead!"
Robin could not keep
the tears from spilling down her cheeks. "Why can't you just turn away,
Jason? Why do you have to keep getting involved?"
Jason shook his head
irritably. "I don't want anyone to get hurt, Robin," he said quietly. "You
and Michael are in more danger now than you were before. It's not just
Moreno out to get me now, Robin, it's my own men. I have to step forward
and take charge again or every man in the organization will be breathing
down our necks!"
Robin wiped the tears
from her eyes and sniffed loudly. "There has to be something you can do."
Jason sighed. "I can
call Sonny," he said carefully. "But that's it. And I can't gaurantee you
he'll have the answer, either."
"It's worth a try
though."
"Yeah, I guess it
is," Jason agreed. "But I can't call him here. I'll go down by the docks."
"I can leave," Robin
said, wiping at her eyes with a handkerchief.
"It's not you," Jason
said. "It's the cops. I don't want to take the chance of Taggert finding
out where Sonny is." Robin nodded and watched silently as Jason left the
apartment.
After he left she
walked into the room to get Michael. "Hey, sleepyhead," she said softly
to him, carrying him out into the living room. "Your dad had to leave for
a while. But that's okay. You can go to the park with Mommy," Robin said
and kissed the baby's forehead. Michael squirmed playfully in her arms.
"What the hell are
you doing with my son?" Carly asked in horror from the doorway.
"Carly!" Robin exclaimed,
jumping up. "What are you doing-"
"Let go of my son,"
Carly hissed. "Give me my baby!" she shrieked furiously when Robin didn't
respond.
"I'm just holding
him," Robin said, slowly backing away.
"You said you were
his mommy!" Carly screamed. "He's MY son! You can't have him! Now get your
hands off my baby!" She snatched Michael from Robin's arms. He immediately
burst into tears in his mother's embrace. "Shh," Carly said soothingly.
"I got you away from her, there's no reason to cry, sweetie."
"What are you doing
here, Carly?" Robin asked, sitting again on the couch. "How did you even
know where to go? Did you go to the penthouse?"
"NO, I didn't go to
the penthouse," Carly snapped. "Jason told me where he was moving. Didn't
you think he would?" Robin didn't say a word. She only continued to watch
Carly carefully. "Jason cares about me," Carly said, stroking Michael's
chest. He had finally quit crying and now laid quietly in her arms. "He
wouldn't leave and not tell me where to find him."
"He gave up the penthouse,"
Robin said, still eyeing Carly. "He gave it up along with that whole lifestyle."
"Oh, come on Robin,"
Carly scoffed, a smile spreading across her face. "You don't honestly believe
that, do you?"
"I don't understand."
"Jason just tells
you what you want to hear. Did you really think he'd leave the orginization?
For YOU?" Carly shook her head, laughing. "He sure played you for a fool,"
she said, and gently tickled her son's nose.
Robin stared in horror
and disbelief. She stood and faced Carly. "He's taking care of it right
now," she said. "He's getting out for good."
Carly shook her head
again. "You know, I almost feel sorry for you. It must be really hard to
have everyone you care about lying to you all the time."
Robin tried to hide
the hurt in her eyes, but failed. Tears sprang to her eyes for the second
time that night. "I'm going out for a walk," she said. She started toward
the door, then stopped suddenly and turned back to Carly. "When Jason comes
home tell him I'm going to stay with Brenda at the cottage tonight."
"Oh sure," Carly said.
"I'll be sure to tell him." She waited until Robin had shut the door behind
her, then grinned and snorted. She crossed the room with Michael in her
arms and set him gently on the couch, then sat beside him. She tickled
him lightly on his stomach, and shook her head, grinning. "This is too
easy."
